Good to hear that you loved it! Among other things, I thought the scene after the title sequence was really well done. The moody piano music certainly didn't hurt (slow clap for Michael Giacchino) and it showed a lot of future Earth which was great. I actually loved all the Earth scenes and for a moment I was thinking "what if they set this movie mostly on Earth?" Imagine the balls that would take to do a Star Trek movie on Earth.
I loved the heck out of this movie and I hope they can do a Starfleet Academy type tv show (or something based on Earth) in the future.
The only complaint that I have about the film at all is just in the title. The addition of "Into Darkness" just seems there to be a marketing tool to tell newcomers to the series that this is going to plunge the series into a realistic grittiness that they want to embrace. But there's nothing here that at least to me seemed to say that on say the same level of a Batman movie.
I think it had the potential to go more gritty and 'realistic' but it doesn't quite get over the hump. Not that it's bad but if this was in tv show form, they most likely would've played a little more with the morality and things. But JJ wants to focus on the action so that's cool. It'd be awesome of there as a Trek tv show now and they could sort of do a prologue and an epilogue to this movie where they go deeper into certain events and peoples' actions.
Benedict Cumberbatch plays John Harrison and for me, this is my first exposure to Cumberbatch as I still have yet to see the Sherlock series. I was extremely impressed with this young actor and just think he's destined to bigger things down the road. When J.J. Abrams makes the seventh Star Wars movie, he'd be wise to do something with Cumberbatch in that as well.
He was so awesome in the film, I love him to bits. He's excellent in Sherlock too but he's playing different characters and it was good to see him in this role.
I'm looking forward to seeing where goes from here and I really hope he gets cast as a Jedi.
I am a bit concerned.
Yeah me too although if the new director is good then at least we'd get a different feel with the next movie and hopefully the new director would bring somehing unique to the table. I loved Into Darkness to bits but it did feel like another JJ Abrams movie (not that there's anything wrong with that).
Maybe Bryan Singer would finally get a crack at it
