Now as someone who got their first tattoo this year, and is longingly looking forward to my second, I spend A LOT of time thinking about whether what I'm getting will be timeless. Now everyone is different and I sincerely hope this person will love their Backatar (TM) for decades to come. But when you get something like that, which is caught up in the cultural zeitgeist of the moment, don't you have to put MAJOR odds on the idea that you'll not feel strongly about this thing in a few years, much less when you're old?

He's going to feel silly when they release Tattoos in 3D  Bangs Head

I feel you Wood. I waited until I was 30 to get my first to make sure it was something I would appreciate when I'm 80. I'm glad I did, my first choice when I was 20 was to get the Bobba Fett Bounty Hunter emblem. I would be kicking myself now.

Backatar (TM)

Roll On Floor Laughing Roll On Floor Laughing Roll On Floor Laughing

Actually, I really do hope this guy likes his tats in the long-term.  As the owner of a couple of tattoos that I thought were a lot cooler in the 90's when I got them, I can feel for him.

First thought when I saw the beginning of this thread: How did Joel get pictures of VinceB and why is he the ones posting them. Then I took a closer look and thought about Vince getting Avatar tattoos all over his back and realized someone was trying to be funny, and I laughed. Good one! Tongue

I think you're being nice. Even if you love Avatar for the rest of your life, and the next, that tattoo just looks bad. I know art is subjective, but is anyone looking at those tats saying, that's extreme, but it's well done? I've seen tattoos that I thought were silly, and might not hold up for the owner long-term, but at least the craft behind the ink was solid. This tattoo looks rough. Not only the ink, which isn't the worst ever, but the total lack of thought gone into the composition. But then, that might just be the guy's design philosophy, and the tattooist had his or her arms tied.

I want a tattoo, but I'm so fickle, I fear that anything I get will get old to me sooner or later. I had one design that I was sure I wanted, and I sat on that shit for 5 years to be sure, and lets just say I'm glad I never got the ink.

I think that you guys need to cut Vince some slack on his Backatar.  Remember, a great man once said, "There is no bad art"....

...but apparently there are "bad decisions".

I am getting my second tattoo (technically my third) this Tuesday after waiting quite a while after my first to figure out what I wanted.  My first tattoo I got at 18 then last year I had it extended up and down my arm (from elbow to pretty much close to my neck) and covered up and recolored.  Took me 15 years just to get to that point, so I am a little conservative when it comes to figuring out what I want and where i want it.

I am sure (at least I hope) this person has some connection to the movie that pushed him to get this work, but that is a big commitment. Plus, as others have mentioned, there is a shelf life feel to work like this that you don't really want from a tattoo that is going to be permanent.  Especially one that takes up this much real estate.

to each his own but some of those are just strange ideas for tatoos and then others are just plain disturbing.

So Tuesday night I got another tattoo (a lotus flower) that is going to at some point lead into a partial sleeve down my left arm.

I love how it turned out so I thought I would share it.

Nice work Jeff!, keep posting as the piece progresses.  I've been thinking about what my next one will be, I've been leaning towards something comics originated stuff, but not superheroes.  Been thinking along the lines of a back piece featuring the Ditko-era Eternity figure with some Kirby crackle, and maybe throw in Galactus's infinity ship on the periphery.  I've got to piece together some images before I can really decide how it should look.
