i have no advice for the move itself, but one thing that helped my family was getting a storage unit. we packed up everything we had, separating essential items from non-essential. all non essentials went into storage, so all we needed to transfer were the boxes of items we really needed.
start packing up several months before the actual move. it takes a surprising amount of time to sort out your stuff. sell or donate stuff you don't need: old clothes, electronics, appliances etc. trash all the garbage (of which there's always a surprising amount of). start moving stuff bit by bit to the storage unit.
good luck.

Gun Barrel is far from Dallas (It is not as close as you think)... i wouldn't worry about spending to much money on rent in Gun Barrel. You are going to have to drive for a good LCS but it is worth it. Zeus Comics is by far the best LCS in Dallas. Titan Comics has a huge selection of back issues and Lone Star Comics (mycomicshop.com) and Keith's Comics you can find everything else.

Honestly you just do it. You move out. You learn what you can live with and what you can not live without. You learn to budget your money, keep track of your expenses and save. Sometimes i would have to tighten my belt and do without some of the luxury items (including comics) that i wanted so i can have a roof over my head, lights in my room and food in my belly. When I was in college I worked two jobs, one job in an office the second job working Valet on top of all that i still had to do tons of homework not too mention I was in a Fraternity that always need be to be somewhere doing something.

I really second the getting your crap together ahead of time. I have moved all around and even in my most nomadic days, it would still take forever. It is pretty easy to get overwhelmed. Usually I run out of time and end up throwing the final reminents in some boxes. Months later when I unpack, I realized I wasted time, money, etc. packing crap I don't need. It is a good way to cull stuff. I left my big comic collection at my parents, but everything else could fit into either a Chrysler E-Class or a Mercury Sable (depending on when). The last few moves are post-marriage so much more crap = moving company. Once you get married, you will accomulate stuff very quickly (actually my wife is much less a pack rat than me but 2 people > 1 person in the stuff world). If you have lots of stuff I do suggest a moving company. It costs extra but it is worth it. You can also get a little insurance to go with it. Now is the time to be brutally honest about what you need and what you don't. I was lucky to have a parent who would tolerate holding on to many comics for me while I moved hither and yon. Also want to think about budgets, etc. When I fled the nest, I was lucky enough to be moving with a bunch of friends so we were able to pool our resources. As you know from your first attempt, you are looking at not only rent, but utilities. Additionally you will need household crap. If you don't have nice stuff now, you can always get cheap linens and kitchen stuff from Goodwill (or whatever thrift store you like). Don't forget you may need some additional cash for deposits (some utilities require them if you don't have good credit). You will have lots of fun. I enjoyed living in different parts of the country. Keep it up. P.S. Just saw your post about owning a home. Hope my post didn't come off as patronizing. If you already are on the ownership track then you are pretty far ahead of the game. I didn't get my stuff together until much later (some might argue I never had).

You would be surprised how cool many people are. Just reach out and find people that used to live there or near there and ask them about the area. Most of people are glad to help. I think with the internet it is easier. Back in my day 1, you would check the yellow pages and check the temp agencies. Some of them are national, so if I had worked for 1, I had an in at the local branch. Unfortunately in today's labor market it could be tight. Then you grab a paper and check the rent classifieds. I always lived in the cheap part of town, but not the worst part. If you want your lady friend to visit, you need to make the neighborhood is OK. Remember it is different for women. I could live places that I would not advise a single woman to live in. I have also had good luck with roommate/housemate situations, but you need to have good spider-sense. They are likely going to be slightly crazy (who else would randomnly advertise for a stranger to live with them) but you need to be able to tell slightly crazy from batshit crazy/criminal intent from 1 meeting. Another trick is to get one of your buddies to move with you/look for people moving to that location. I lived in CO, CA, OR, NC, NY, PA, MD, DC, but usually in good sized towns. I never lived in Texas but I bet the people are good by and large. Like I said before, if you own property you are already ahead of the game from where I was. I would suggest a little long term planning (I just sort of floated), but by asking this board for advice you are already showing some good instincts. Don't worry about failure. I failed plenty and had to move on with my tail between my legs more times than not. But you aren't going to find any successful people that haven't failed. I wish when I was younger I appreciated that more. Good things will happen, sometimes it just takes a long time. Ha, ha, I have even moved cross-country for a woman (and did many more stupid shit in that regard). Look at me now, over 10 years married (not to the one I moved cross-country for). You are going to be great. 1Let's play a game. Count the outdated technological references.

Thats seems pretty cheap for a 2 bedroom apartment. I would see about getting a transfer to that location before moving there. If you move down there and they have no openings you could be screwed. Smaller towns have a lot fewer job opportunities. Talk to your managers about transferring to that area, usually if you give them enough advanced notice they could probably help set it up for you. You can always look for a new job once you get down there and are familiar with the area.

by making more money? roommates? You'd be lucky to find a 1 bedroom for that in Orlando, FL.

You also don't want to see the rents around here. They are pretty steep.
