Man, you sound completely unprepared and being nervous as you are is not helping.  First, take a deep deep breath and calm down.  Everything will work out if you relax and just plan ahead.

I moved 550 miles away but it was a college transition.  However, it was also from Buffalo to Chicago.  When I moved out here, the cost of everything floored me.  So here's my advice contribution.  Its all about budgeting.  When I moved to an apartment, I took my monthly money and set a list of all necessary expenses.  Rent, Food, transportation, and phone being the main ones.  Others can include utilities not included in rent.  My only other expense was comics which I also budgeted in with what was left, but not everything.  But if you can't afford it, they have to go.  You have other priorities.

Hi Chris, recently (at the beginning of this year) I just had a similar big life change. I can definitely understand your apprehension.

I left a fairly well paying job that I had been in for nearly 5 years, moved about 150 kilometers to the city (Sydney), to take up full time study. I swear the closer I got to the date of finishing up at work, the more and more it felt like I was making the wrong decision. I do not think I had ever been so nervous the day I wrote my resignation letter.

I'll be honest, the budgeting took my a while to get used to. I had never done the student thing before, starting an apprenticeship after leaving high school, so I have always had a weekly paycheck. Plus the job I left was fairly well payed with decent overtime, roughly 60 to 70k a year. Once I decided what I was doing I had been saving like a beaver for the last year so I was kind of budgeting but nothing to how I really needed too. Let me tell you the comic book buying habits I had gained over the last few years had them having dwindling down pretty damn quick. But once I slapped myself on the wrist for that and made an effort to cut them back, plus the discovery of the city library helped, everything was fine.

You get used to buying mince instead of steak, the cheapest bear on tap and a glass of scotch every fourth beer when you go out as opposed to instead of beer pretty quickly when you have to. And its all good. I still read comics more then I have time to (just the regina pile can now fit on a small shelf), I still eat and still get drunk and have a laugh. Plus the thought of it not being for ever helps, as well as the fact that i have a trade so work is there if it gets too tough. But if i can survive on nothing pal, trust me, you will be fine.

On advice for the move dude, my situation was probably different to yours. I was going from a house to share accom. in a flat, so I pretty much jettisoned everything. The stuff I couldn't bear to get rid of I dumped at mums, the rest I gave to friends, or the salvos (like a goodwill store) or sold for extra cash. I remember I gave a shit load of books (prose and non-fiction novels, not comics) to the salvos. Mum didnt really have the room and I thought, honestly I will never read them again and if I hold onto them I will just be dragging them around on every move I make. So yeh my advice, the less stuff you take is the less stuff you will have to worry about.

Though I must stress, be sure to have work before you move man, specially if you are moving to a small town with limited employment. I dont know what the American social security system is like but from the few Micheal Moore "docos" I have seen I am guessing it pretty non existent.

Also in looking for work, aim for something better then what you have now, make the move more about something else then just about moving for the lady, it will be better in the long run. I dont mean to be cynical but women are fickle beasts at the best of times dude.

Anyways best of luck too you Chriss918.

Edit: Also if your applying for jobs please don't forget to do a spell and grammar check on the cover letter.

how can some one pay 700 dollars on a normal job
NiceAndBlue and I make mini-comics. This is a luxurious, lavish lifestyle that allows us to drive fast cars, buy expensive laser guns, and see many, many naked ladies. It is not a normal job; you are correct.
