Great month Monsta.  I loved everyone's old... and new takes on their characters.  This month I'm in charge so I'll just cut all of the pomp and circumstance and get right to it.

*******************************************

OK everyone.  I haven't taken the reigns in awhile, but May is gonna' be my month.  I just came back from an awesome weekend at C2E2 (where I bought 2 sets of Copic warm & cool grays and Copic MultiLiner's.  Now... I'm ready to use them.

So here's what we're gonna' do.  We're gonna' draw...

 Hearts HeartsCheesecake Hearts Hearts

That's right fanboys and fangirls, we're doing good girl art in the styles of... and inspired by... such modern masters of the form as

Adam Hughes   Drool

Terry Dodson   Downtown

Arthur Adams I'd Hit It Sign

and Frank Cho  Swooning

Now here's the catch... like any good tease, you have to put spoiler tags on them.  Also, to keep in theme with the art of the tease, there can be NO nudity (This means that you can't show the naughty bits).  Make your drawings as sexy as you can, but keep it within the guidelines.  But most importantly HAVE FUN DRAWING!!

Lastly, I've already said that I believe that this month will set a record for most views in a month  Whistle.  But it would be SUPER COOL if we could knock down the "most pages record" set by the Spidey-villians month too.

*******************************************

HAVE FUN!

If you're new to the thread here's how it works.  We're here to have fun and to sharpen our drawing skills.  All amateurs & professionals are welcome to participate.  If you want to submit a piece of artwork, here are the rules...Number #1) only post characters for the current month's assignment (a little spillover is OK from the previous month)...Number #2) You must be the artist (we're not looking for your original art collection, that's another thread)...& Number #3) (and most importantly) Have fun drawing.

I really hope people embrace this challenge. I know photo reference has gotten a bad name because a lot of LAZY artists stopped using photos as reference and started tracing. Pro artists like myself however have used photos as reference for centuries. You can come up to me at a con and ask for a matt smith or tennant doctor who and in front of you I will pull up a pic of them and use it as reference to make you what you want.

I trained myself without classes to draw large sports portraits of athletes by drawing the images from multiple baseball cards and magazines. Its a great way to train ones eye. If you do it for the 15 years I have, by new I use models as very loose reference cause I can draw a body and face the way its supposed to look very easilly without reference.
Well, I knew this may not catch anyone's particular fancy. It may just require too much. However, I firmly believe it can help improve our abilities to draw. I guess I need to get the ball rolling too with my contributions too, but this month could not have fallen on the worst time for me to draw.... :'-(

I also realized that I failed to post a sample of my challenge initially. Below are 2 samples of something I ended up doing on Jimmy Palmiotti's prompting, whom I also met at Dallas Comic Con 2 years ago. He challenged me to pick some photos from his "Sexy Monday (NSFW!!!)" thread he runs weekly on his blog and to draw from those photos to improve my drawing of females. Disclaimer: Jimmy does not post credits or the sources of these photos, and I had no way to figuring out the sources of these photos.

Goddess Warrior:

Hunt-her & Her Cycle:

Let me stress, you DO NOT have to take this challenge to the full extreme (unless you want to) or even fuss with so much source credit, research, etc. Main thing is to stretch yourself a bit and have fun! Click on my images to see a larger version.

Great topic Jun!

Admittedly, I was a little hesitant at first, not sure what I could contribute, but I think I found a solution. Not crazy about it, but it was a fun exercise and hopefully I can do more this month.

Harry, that is right on the money of this exercise! First of all, where did you get that photo... 'cause it's TOTALLY awesome. I love how the photo is cropped and the middle figure seems almost a giant slouching to fit into the photo.

I think you did an excellent job of interpreting the faces (I shoot myself in the foot because I have a hard time abstracting the features) and were dead on capturing the pose of each figure. Excellent!

In fact, it would have been even more fun if you took the same photo and dressed them up as Fear Agents, or Ghostbusters, maybe... hint, hint. ;-)

Here's my first attempt.

I really liked a photo that Pat Loika put up in the EOC photo a day thread. So I hope that he doesn't mind that I borrowed it!

And my version with water soluble graphite and brush pen.

Your sketch almost looks more realistic than the photo. Cheesy

I really want to read those Masters of Kung Fu books.

I actually use photo ref moderately often on Awful Lot.  Here are the photos and page I did today. Credit to the marketing department for So You Think You Can Dance

And I did a quick Comic Curve about the page if you want a little more process:

I really like that! I'm glad you chose a photo with such dramatic lighting. I really like the fact that you took some chances and reinterpreted the shadows in your rendering. Great job!

That would be a totally badass movie! :-) I like that handlebar mustache and working in that iconic Bruce Lee stance! Great job.

Was this done with traditional tools or digital?

What a great idea! Talked about a perfectly fitting use of the photo references. Those extreme poses of dancers would be nearly impossible to draw only from imagination, unless maybe if you were a dancer. I'm gonna try to check out process post as soon as I get some breathing room! Great job!

Thanks, all of you! You're doing a great job!

Yes it would be, and it would have been technically possible, I looked it up. I even looked up their heights.

I did it traditional but after I started drawing I ran out of room and had it laid out wrong   Embarrassed so I drew each character on a different sheet of paper and then stitched it together in PS.

I will try to get a better image of the actual drawing, but here's the Freddie Nova, the model from tonight's Dr. Sketchy session holding my illustration of her:

She chose me as the first place winner so I was all giddy and mentally disorganized in the positive vibes that followed and forgot to snap a picture of the image. Boogie

The source photo (with a bit of touch-up to make it mostly SFW):

The drawn pic:

My pencil quite literally exploded on me halfway through, so I finished using just my brush pen. It was nerve-wracking.

its 11x17 in copic marker under my pseudonym Cincinnatus that I will be using for my sketch card and comic work starting with my latest set for cryptozoic.

just realized I also used this in may for avengers month. There you can see it from blue line layouts.

Here's the second stage of roughs for a mock cover I've had brewing in my head for a while. All chimp faces and nazi uniforms have been referenced.

Going to add more Nazi Chimps then lightbox it and finish it.
