I dug Mr. Cardenas  idea and was super flattered to be thought of for some truly great characters. So the challenge this month is to do a sketch, page, pitch, comic, whatever you feel like, of one of the suggestions in the thread linked above. If you were not mentioned either pick a character you would love a crack at and go to town on that, or post in the thread, pm me or email me boles297@gmail.com and we will assign one for you.

Okay, everyone! Here is one topic that I'm sure will have the lowest turnout of any sketching months! That's right. If I can't shoot for the highest participation, I might as go for the record on the opposite extreme! 

So finally in May, I met the legendary Neal Adams for the first time in my life. After I thanked him for his art that helped inspired me to draw better comics, he began the following conversation that inspired this month's theme:
Neal Adams: So you're an artist?
Me: Yes, sir. An aspiring one.
Neal: You draw over photos much?
Me: Well, if you mean trace, almost never, sir.
Neal: Well, you should. You should work from photos as much as you can if you want to get better at drawing. Let me tell you something… I'm one of the few industry pros that would admit to working over photos. 99.9% of them are liars.
Me:Uhhhhh…

So in light of Neal's newly imparted wisdom, I introduce to you this month's challenge: Drawing Inspiration From Real Life/Photos. The objective here is not so much of what or what not to draw, but instead how we draw from a photo or real life subject we are looking at. Of course, this does not mean you are limited to just life drawing sketches. Draw your inspirations from the photo/real life object and turn it into something that's comics related. A simple photo of a rock can be turned into Superman grasping a kryptonite while collapsing. Turn that guy with bed hair at the coffee shop into the Joker. Have fun, let your imaginations run high. Only requirement is that you include that reference from real life/photo actually in your artwork, paying special attention to the textures and lighting.

If you are working from a photo and want to post both the photo and your work, that would be great. Of course, let's respect the copyright owner of the photo that are not your own. Give proper credit if the source becomes a major part of your derivative work, and you are on your own in navigating the murky legal waters especially if you plan on distributing such work for monetary gain.

I apologize in advance if this is totally out in the left field… but I'd be happy to see what may come of it.

I routinely work with professional models whom I hire for sets I work on for DC, Marvel,Topps, UD and Cryptozoic.
This is right up my allley.  I will hit you with one I just did for a cover of comic book short story based on the Neko Case Song "This Tornado Loves you." I always promise the models that the original Photo references will not leak because a lot of times they just take them self shot in a messy apartment.

I really hope people embrace this challenge. I know photo reference has gotten a bad name because a lot of LAZY artists stopped using photos as reference and started tracing. Pro artists like myself however have used photos as reference for centuries. You can come up to me at a con and ask for a matt smith or tennant doctor who and in front of you I will pull up a pic of them and use it as reference to make you what you want. 

I trained myself without classes to draw large sports portraits of athletes by drawing the images from multiple baseball cards and magazines. Its a great way to train ones eye. If you do it for the 15 years I have, by new I use models as very loose reference cause I can draw a body and face the way its supposed to look very easilly without reference.

Fantastic! Thanks for sharing that piece. So was the background scenery totally from imagination or collages of references you had mocked up?
