Great month Monsta.  I loved everyone's old... and new takes on their characters.  This month I'm in charge so I'll just cut all of the pomp and circumstance and get right to it.

*******************************************

OK everyone.  I haven't taken the reigns in awhile, but May is gonna' be my month.  I just came back from an awesome weekend at C2E2 (where I bought 2 sets of Copic warm & cool grays and Copic MultiLiner's.  Now... I'm ready to use them.

So here's what we're gonna' do.  We're gonna' draw...

 Hearts HeartsCheesecake Hearts Hearts

That's right fanboys and fangirls, we're doing good girl art in the styles of... and inspired by... such modern masters of the form as

Adam Hughes   Drool

Terry Dodson   Downtown

Arthur Adams I'd Hit It Sign

and Frank Cho  Swooning

Now here's the catch... like any good tease, you have to put spoiler tags on them.  Also, to keep in theme with the art of the tease, there can be NO nudity (This means that you can't show the naughty bits).  Make your drawings as sexy as you can, but keep it within the guidelines.  But most importantly HAVE FUN DRAWING!!

Lastly, I've already said that I believe that this month will set a record for most views in a month  Whistle.  But it would be SUPER COOL if we could knock down the "most pages record" set by the Spidey-villians month too.

*******************************************

HAVE FUN!

If you're new to the thread here's how it works.  We're here to have fun and to sharpen our drawing skills.  All amateurs & professionals are welcome to participate.  If you want to submit a piece of artwork, here are the rules...Number #1) only post characters for the current month's assignment (a little spillover is OK from the previous month)...Number #2) You must be the artist (we're not looking for your original art collection, that's another thread)...& Number #3) (and most importantly) Have fun drawing.

Sorry I've been absent guys, been on Vacation for the past 2 weeks.

Here's what I came up with for Jun's Challenge while sitting in the lobby of "Old Faithful Inn" in Yellowstone.  I did my kids as Supers.

Gotta' admit that I think that the girls turned out a little better than the boys, but...  Whaaaat

The photo's are spoiler tagged if you don't want to "see behind the curtain".   Wink

Jake as Robin...

Madeline as Mary Marvel...

Kara as Supergirl...

and Erik as Iron Man...

They are all great!

If you didn't do Kara as Supergirl, I was gonna ride up to Indy and kick you in the shin!.   Hope you had a great family get away.

Or, Wally Wood's version...

Never draw what you can swipe
Never swipe what you can trace
Never trace what you can photocopy
Never photocopy what you can clip out and paste down

 Cheesy
There is so much pain and suffering associated with the life of this genius that it is hard to take a comment out of context and label him as a swiper (I am not saying that you are doing so Harry).   He was one of the most talented artists in the medium and yet he committed suicide!

He gave us this.   (Sorry for the diatribe).

The age of the internet has blurred the lines between photo reference and "tracing".  All of my artist friends were photo referencing back in the 80s.   It was nothing to be ashamed of.    It was a badge of honor.   You were doing your homework.   Those who did not photo reference were lazy.

Well, there's been some amazing work here again this month, looks like I might not get chance to complete a new piece, so here's some scribbles from my sketchbook earlier this year (cop out).

These are people I saw walking about on the South Bank of the Thames. In some cases they were sat talking or watching street performers, but sometimes they would move away, so I'd have to fill in some of the detail from memory/imagination. In the case of the second page I was trying to personalise the drawings a little.

I think it's pretty good exercise to go and sit in the park or coffee shop and try and catch everyday folk. Even if they're moving about. Some of the best drawings I ever did were like 10 seconds, because you really have to try and catch the whole essence of the person/situation before it's gone. I carry a sketchbook around most of the time, but I really don't use it enough...

It's a shame what happened to Wally Wood later in life and it's why comic fans need to support the Hero Initiative until better contracts and benefits are in place.

The difference between Wally Wood and modern photo-reference users is you can't look at a Wally Wood illustration and say, "Oh that was swiped from Playboy". It always looked like a Wally Wood illustration.

Robert Crumb had good advice on photo reference too, paraphrasing badly, but it was something along the lines of "Photo reference the things I don't like to draw or don't occur in nature." It's one of his lines in the Crumb documentary.

Photo reference was more common in the early years of the US comic market when the demand was higher, and if you look at Japan where demand is still high photo reference is extremely common place. Yet it takes nothing away from the wonderful story telling and illustration style of guys like Kiyohiko Azuma.

Sorry to contribute to the tangent. I love Wally Wood's work and it is indeed a shame what happened to him later in life.

Thanks, Harry... but that Wally Wood was a real deal though...  Yes

Oh, for sure. What I took from that was, like everything else, photos are a means to an end. Tools. Their effectiveness, of course, depends on the artist.

I have been wanting to set the topic of the Sketchbook Challenge since it started. I Always
had the same idea since day one. I just hoped that nobody used it before I got the chance.
Now as my birthday is coming up (August 3) I get to set the sketchbook challenge. So here
goes.....

As long as I've been reading comics there is one genre that pretty much always hits the sweet
spot. My bookshelves are filled with trade after trade starting with  New Mutants
of the 80's and Generation x, New Warriors of the 90's got me hooked. Then I dove into the time suck that is
Legion of Super Heroes.  I quit comics for about 5 years and what got me back? Runaways and
Young Avengers. I never got into teen titans much but love the Robin solo series' of years past.
Spider-man Especially the two Ultimate Spidermen and Buffy definitely qualify as well.

Thats right we're talking TEEN COMIC CHARACTERS Simple and fun.  Any character in their Teenaged
glory. The only requirements are to have fun and If you draw a character like Nova or Spiderman, do
something to make it known it is the teen version of said  character.

Just to make it more fun I am going to do a bunch of (at least 3) fully painted 11 x 17's and I  will pick a best
of the month. Maybe top 3  and ship that forumite or forumites the fully painted Teen 11x17 of that persons Choice.  SO POST EARLY AND OFTEN.

like I said I will try to do at least 3 fully painted 11x17's and plenty of doodles. I am currently working on a hush hush set for Cryptozoic though so..........     At the very least I will be on the forum every day to comment on the art posted.
