That would be a lot of cap space at WR, a franchised welker and whatever they have to pay Wallace

True.  You also have to consider the additional accumulative cost of 2 first round, 2 second round and 2 third round draft choices (though NE would give up one of those 1st rounders [31st over all]as compensation).

I don't know how all this plays out financially but it can't be cheap.

I know Wood usually takes me down when I say something like this BUT I think I'm correct this time when I say...

Hines Ward = Hall of Fame

You GOTTA give me this one Wood.  Yes

its not out of the question that they'd let him test free agency rather than being forced to over pay him.

patriots every year have 2 number ones, and load of high picks but never use them. its locally one of the criticisms of the organization

Steelers release Aaron Smith as well.  Once again, I understand why (dude has been injured a bunch lately) but Jeebus.  The Steelers are obviously turning the page on an era.

In Colbert, Khan, Tomlin & Rooney we trust.  Not Worthy

Chris Kemoeatu has now been released by the Steelers (the offensive line penalty machine)... I would assume that after that move the Steelers will have enough $$$ to keep Wallace.

I am not sure if I should post this here or in the "I'm baffled..." thread...

DeSean Jackson given the franchise tag.  The kid's got talent but he seems like a pain in the ass.   Thinking

We've had this debate 100 times at Footballguys.

His rings and longevity MAY eventually get him in, but a) he doesn't deserve to be in, and b) he's a long shot.

If I'm putting odds, I say he's got a 1/3 shot. I see him most likely making it in much later in his life, certainly not in the first five years of eligibility.

maybe they hope to trade him and let someone else work out a long term deal and are thinking they can get a pick out of doing this, if they have the cap room then it makes sense.

I would just like to add that I can't see Ward getting into the HOF if guys like Cris Carter and Andre Reed can't get in.

Question… what free agent do you want to see your team sign or pass on?
As a Phins fan I do not want Manning in the Mia. I don’t think that he fits the west coast style offence that Philbin will be installing. I rank this as more of an important reason for not signing Manning over the injury speculation.

Eagles are always aggressive and I generally don't get too worked up on what they might do until I see it happen. BUT, I will say that I have absolutely ZERO interest in bringing Plaxico Burress into the fold -- and Burress has been lobbying to every media hound about coming to PHI.

Carter will absolutely get in, and soon. That's not a question.  Reed probably will, too, although I think that might take longer.

Giving DJax the tag was widely expected.

Yes, he's absolutely a pain in the ass.

Yes, they would be open to trading him but they also realize there's very little chance they would get offers with enough value to justify the trade.  Remember that if they let him walk in free agency next year, they almost certainly will receive a 3rd round compensatory pick. So any trade would have to be "better" than that, and I don't see teams shelling out a 2nd rounder for DJax given the massive amount of quality free agent WRs available this year.

The reason to tag him -- and it's one I agree with -- is optionality. He's already on record as being fine with the move. It pays him big dollars but doesn't require the team to commit to him long term.  This is basically a show me year where he can either re-emerge as the Pro Bowler we saw a few season ago, or show that he's not worth committing to long term. No skin of the Eagles backs either way. Win. Win.

Stalwart linebacker James Farrior didn't heed my advice... He answered his phone today and he too got the axe!

I don't know nuthin' but I gotta guess the Steelers are done.  We'll see...

The thing about the bounty fund is all teams do it, he just got caught.
