OK, I truly believe the NFL is shooting itself in the foot... http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=6586630The NFL's new proposal to punish teams for their players' multiple flagrant hits that result in fines has been nicknamed by some in the league as the "Steelers rule." Not surprisingly, some of the hardest hitters on Pittsburgh's defense took to social media to blast the league's new initiative.
The punishment will be financial, although league vice president Adolpho Birch said Tuesday he didn't rule out commissioner Roger Goodell applying further sanctions, such as stripping clubs of draft choices. Also Tuesday, owners approved rules amendments for player safety, targeting launching and further defining what qualifies as a defenseless player.
In his news conference Wednesday to wrap up the spring owners meetings in Indianapolis, Goodell said the "objective is to have a club accountability" in making the game safer. He said he hasn't contemplated yet whether he would take draft picks away from teams, but he did say the NFL would summon teams to the league offices in New York to discuss problems, if needed.
"We're all responsible for making this game as safe as possible," he said.
Birch would not identify which 2010 teams would have been subject to fines had the policy been in place then, but did say at least three teams might have been punished. One player, Pittsburgh All-Pro linebacker James Harrison, was fined $100,000 for flagrant hits last season.
"We'll check the number of fines and the level of fines going out for infractions that relate to various player safety violations," Birch said. "Particularly head and helmet issues."
Harrison expressed his displeasure on his Twitter account Tuesday.
"I'm absolutely sure now after this last rule change that the people making the rules at the NFL are idiots," Harrison said.
Teammate LaMarr Woodley also spoke out through his Twitter account.
"Thoughts on "the steelers rule"??? lol im sorry that im not sorry we hit 2 hard," he wrote.
Steelers president Art Rooney II told USA Today that he's reserving judgment for now.I have a sick feeling that the NFL may be walking down the same path as boxing if they keep this up. They are the top dog now but if they continue to neuter their game a MMA-type competitor could come up and gobble their fanbase. the Tiki

I agree with you Tiki, that the league may ultimately be hurting itself but the league is also in an awful position here as more and more information about concussions and brain damage come forward. Funny you mention boxing/MMA as those sports also deal with the same issue. Boxing takes a terrible toll on the fighters because of the large gloves and the fact that they take repeated blows to the head. People die in the ring boxing every year and the long term damage is apparent when you look at some of the former greats. MMA on the other hand has had only 1 recorded death in the ring ever, although its too early to really speak to long term damage for those fighters. Football is in a position where they have to do something so that years later as the data gets more and more damning they can look back and say, "We reacted as quickly as we could when the data was presented" but I agree that if the penalty's start getting ridiculous to the point that the game we know doesn't look the same it's gonna hurt the league.

Well boys, looks like we are going to have football after all,and it looks like it's going to be a 10 year contract. Also I am super stoked for free agency. Hopefully my Redskins can improve on defense with some quality free agents.

HAHAHAHAHA the players are rightfully pissed off right now, a deal may still get done, but we are by no mean guaranteed football yet. In my opinion that was an awful move by the owners, forcing the players to a position where they look bad for not just signing off on a deal they had yet to look over. Prior to this it seemed like real progress was being made but the owners just slapped the players in the mouth and called them stupid.

The league I play in is seriously considering going IDP. I am against it, but I think I am going to get out voted by the league. I know nothing about IDP strategies. The Tiki Many leagues are going IDP by adding 3-5 defensive players. In that situation, it's pointless because there are tons of high end point scorers available at all times for the active owners, and thus all it accomplishes is dulling the impact of your offensive lineup. But full IDP? That's the hotness. So much additional strategy involved.

The more I think about IDP players, do I draft them like a RB ( early), like a QB ( early/mid rounds), like a TE ( there are only a handful of good ones) or a K ( last pick)? Thanks for all of your input. The Tiki

Are you guys waiting for the dust to settle with free agency before trying to push out your guide? Or is first to press too alluring? It's been a very strange sight to only see 2-3 FF mags on the newsstands the past month.

Are you guys waiting for the dust to settle with free agency before trying to push out your guide? Or is first to press too alluring? It's been a very strange sight to only see 2-3 FF mags on the newsstands the past month. We stopped putting out a print magazine three years ago, it's a horrendous business. We never made money on it, but used to justify it as a "loss leader" with the idea it would increase eyeballs. But truth is, with magazine readership being what it is, our site gets 10x-20x more eyeballs than even the most popular fantasy rag.

Seeing as how I spent hours last night working on a free agency tracker app? Yes, I'm well aware of that, thanks. You're probably more aware of it than most.... I know you're a die-hard NFL fan like myself so obviously, I was just kidding. It was just amusing to see how quickly the conversation turned to fantasy football. This free agency period should be an entertaining free-for-all. I'm very curious to see what goes down and who ends up where by next week. Speaking of free agency... it just started a few minutes ago!
