Marvel Noise Episode 141

[LA Rabbit]

I started my day in the best way possible by firmly injecting my much needed dose of Marvel Noise right into my head.  The bar is set so consistently high on this show that I get dizzy from lack of oxygen. 

Glad to see the return of Pat.  Happy New Year to you good sir.  Maybe Loquacious Loika's Literary Lists . . . ¹      

I will try to check out that Women of Marvel book if I see it at the LCS.  I think you also finally helped me come to grips with one of my issues with old Shellhead, namely I think his main big bad is weak.  I never cared much for the Mandarin.  He seems like out of some old Republic Pictures serial baddie.  You can tell the measure of a hero from his arch-nemises (as was recently debated on Spider-man vs. Batman on the main boards).  Marvel has some great villians that elevate the heroes:
Captain America = Red Skull
Thor = Loki
X-Men = Magneto and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants²
Silver Surfer = Mephisto
Fantastic Four = Paste Pott Pete
Dr. Strange = Baron Mordo³
Mind you, you don't need a single arch-enemy.  I never felt the Avengers had a single one⁴.  Nor do I feel that way about Spider-man, although I can see how some would put Green Goblin there.

I also don't have a problem with Marvel putting Captain America as a werewolf for a few issues.  The character is 65 years old, they should feel free to have some fun with it.  I think it is better than killing him off and bringing him back⁵.  With so many different stories to tell, there is something for everyone but likewise it cannot always be everyone.

Keep on keeping on.    I love this stuff.      I will have to do a follow-up post of Raker's Dozen and the close-out⁶.

I think I can both wholeheartedly agree and maintain my position on this one!

Even those transition issues of Uncanny (which I thoroughly enjoyed) had a scene with some Danger Room training, or Colossus's strength levels being tested, or some other type of quick action sequence.

Even the first appearance of Vindicator only occurred in the last few pages of an otherwise transition/character issue


...and coming back from the savage land and needing to move the subplots and character moments along gave us a few pages of Prof X battling the Shadow King, who was a one-off villain for over a decade


And, of course, the lead-in to the Proteus saga really had no big action but still had Moira discovering the escape, Beast and Nightcrawler rumbling a bit, and Phoenix's power levels being examined, all 'super-hero-y'/sci-fi/adventure type stuff, even in a transition issue.  


As much as I liked New Avengers #7, it was still noticeable having no action/adventure/super-powers being displayed, etc., in a premier $4 top-of-the-line book whose writer is usually often wrongly criticized for this exact thing to actually go ahead and do just that.  

I'm really not being a hater here, it just was my thought/observation upon finishing the comic

Actually, I dig where you're coming from and you have a good point.  I for one would love to see the prices go down no matter what's in the book. $4 is a lot even if it were one contiguous series of two-page spread fights from splash to back cover.

And I doubt anyone could ever mistake Steve Raker for a hater.

Hey, Wood, if you happen to check back here, I'm curious as to what you thought of Wade Wilson's War (if you read it) given you're a Deadpool fan.  I'm not a regular reader but pick up arcs and specials now and then if they intrigue me and couldn't pass up interior Pearson work on this limited series!

I liked it.....I waited until the issues were done and read them in a couple of sittings and really enjoyed it.  I'm curious if it's because I don't read a lot of Deadpool every month or if the story (mostly the art) stands out from the plethora of other Deadpool stories out there.

We know Pearson's Deadpool from the covers and annual, so it's great to see him do interiors....it's a Deadpool story that turns into a Deadpool/Domino story in the last 2 issues.  It's got a nice twist at the end that brings everything that seemed fractured home.  I say fractured becuase it's Deadpool testifying and insanely revising history...or is he?

Pointless recap Part 2:  Into the Bunker and Out of my Head.

I do love to hear some Raker's Dozen¹.  Glad you survived your scissor encounter.  You are not far off on the super glue trick.  I don't know if you read The Straight Dope or not²

I also enjoyed how you slipped in your movie pitch as well.  I am sold, call up MGM³, and I will take two tickets to summer 2012's biggest blockbuster movie:  "Super Steve versus the Clog Monster" now showing in IMAX and 3D⁴.   

I have not been reading Thor the Mighty Avenger (I have the first issue) although I have to question your comment about it being age appropriate.  You start with saying how Jane and Thor have romance blooming and then, I quote, "Thor reaching the rainbow bridge finally only to be denied access to Asgard's glory by a black Heimdall."  Is that what the kids are calling it nowadays?  I have been married for so long that I can't keep up with the street lingo anymore.  Whatever it is, it sounds pretty sordid⁵.  Am I the only person that went there⁶?

Next time I go to the LCS, if it is there I will pick up the new Black Panther.  An endorsement from both the King and Steve Raker?  It has to be pure comic gold.  I will also check out that two part Women of Marvel thing if it is in stock as Pat mentioned the trade thingy as well.  It seems like that promotion has been going on and on.  Sorry to hear your heart breaking over the treatment of Thanos.  I know the big guy has a special place in your heart.  As I noted before, without Professor Tom Morris on constant call, I wouldn't even know where to begin in the X-universe.  I think I might try jumping back into the FF.  It seems to be getting lots of good publicity and I also like that it seems to be currently self-contained.  I like Galactus⁷.  Any trades you would recommend to start with?  I have been off it for awhile.

I really don't know what's wrong with me⁸.  Venom never really did it for me.  I guess I really enjoyed the black costume adventures of Spidey so Venom just seemed like a re-tread of what was already covered.  I liked Peter vs. the suit.  For me a much more interesting story then just another human with a suit versus Spidey.  I read the first two issues of the Carnage series but for me it is going kind of slow.  I might check out the Venom series.  I am reading the Spider-girl comic so anything is possible.

Keep making mine Marvel Noise.   You guys all rock.   


¹Although my already fragile understanding of this world takes further damage from the twin realizations that (A) Steve Raker reads non-Marvel comics and (2) he reads Marvel comics created after 1985.

I guess I might have come off as too harsh on Venom.  I think there have been some fun stories.  The Dark Avengers stuff worked with the Gargan version.  I just would have liked to see the suit vs Peter only.  Particularly if it could have been done by Steve Ditko.     That would be heaven, but I ain't holding my breath.

I would like to state that even though I was a bit miffed by knowing way in advance that the Black Panther was going to take over the Daredevil book (Marvel really should have kept that under wraps), the first two issues of the arc have been great. I like the whole "Guys, I got this!" attitude he has (turning down help from his wife and Luke Cage). In order for this story line to work, this has to be a pure solo title. The art is solid too...

I think it is fine because these things are NOT purporting to be historical documents depicting the Norse mythology as translated from the Eddas.  These are fun stories taking that material as inspiration and blending it with modern life in America.  I think if it was holding itself out as a faithful interpretation of classic Norse mythology then the question of closeness to the source material is more reasonable to ask. 

Fin Fang Foom does seem more like a lack of creativity but maybe they were going to tie it around by showing that Heimdall was mimicking him because of some previous as-yet-untold adventure.  I would think that it would be better to just make up your own dragon but I ain't paid to write those things.
