No I don't think you missed anything. It's just me reading into it too much.

blog / facebook / twitter / last.fmListen to the 'THE CHEMICAL BOX' podcastsComics were definitely happier, breezier and more confident in their own strengths before Hollywood and the Internet turned the business of writing superhero stories into the production of low budget storyboards or, worse, into conformist, fruitless attempts to impress or entertain a small group of people who appear to hate comics and their creators. - Grant Morrison

I just saw the latest trailer, and I like how it looks to thematically be echoing "Batman Begins" with Bruce Wayne returning to Gotham after an extended period of time. It will be interesting to see how Nolan's vision of the Caped Crusader comes full circle.
However, I am worried by how many scenes seem to take place during the daytime. There's something about "Batman" flying in The Bat during the day that seems a little "off." I guess we'll have to wait and see when the final cut comes out.

What I like about the daytime scenes (at least the ones we've seen so far) is that there seems to be a sense of desperation in them, like this crisis must be dealt with right now, darkness be damned.

I get what you're saying. Realistically crime isn't going to wait until night. It would be interesting strategy on Bane's part to commit his violent acts during a time he knows Batman isn't on patrol.

Awesome shirt. They filmed it here in NYC as well. My brother-in-law got to be an extra. They wanted people with police, firefighter, or military training for that big brawl scene.

There were bits in that trailer that echoed YEAR 100, and if Nolan is going to throw some Pope into his movie I am so much more down for it.
Also the more I see of Hardy the more I think that Nolan has grasped exactly what makes Bane fantastic.

Also the more I see of Hardy the more I think that Nolan has grasped exactly what makes Bane fantastic. I ask this without sarcasm and in all honesty (and to everyone, not just Rick): what IS fantastic about Bane? I've only read a few Batman comics featuring the character and I've seen him on the animated series but Bane has never done much for me. The coolest thing I know about him is that he was intended to be a sort of evil Doc Savage. As a Doc Savage fan, I like that idea, although I've never really picked up on it much in the Bane stories I've seen. For those who think Bane is a really cool character, what stands out about him for you? I'm asking about this because after seeing several trailers, I remain very indifferent to this upcoming Batman movie (especially knowing that it will be nearly 3 hours long!). I'm sure Bane is one of the reasons for my indifference. He doesn't strike me as a very charismatic, interesting villain but maybe I just don't know enough about him.

For what it's worth I have no opinion on Bane as a character in the Batman comics universe, but judging by what we've seen of him in the trailers so far, I'm quite intrigued by the Hardy/Nolan version of him. Part of this probably stems from my admiration of both the actor and director in question.

It has been best articulated here: http://mindlessones.com/2011/01/25/rogues-review-3-bane/He is basically the most focused Batman villain. There is no bullshit, no mind games, just direct personal violence and cunning. Which I think Nolan understands and makes a perfect foil for the last movie.

Thanks, Derek. After reading that, I already find Bane a little more intriguing. Part of this probably stems from my admiration of both the actor and director in question. That's interesting. My only exposure to Hardy's acting was Inception but I liked him in that movie. I've enjoyed most of Nolan's movies too, although I thought The Dark Knight got a bit dull, which makes me really question Nolan's ability to hold my interest in a Batman flick for 2 hours and 45 minutes. Bane doesn't seem interesting or charismatic to me in the trailers but after reading what Derek wrote about him, it sounds like there's enough backstory to the character to make him interesting and hopefully the movie will do that. I suspect that will be essential to making the movie work.

Thanks for the link, although your post and the contents at the link actually kind of reaffirmed why I haven't found Bane terribly interesting to this point. As the blogger wrote, "In Bane all of Batman’s aspirations are scaled down to one, bloated point. We’ll never be more than a bag of sinews, bones and skin, he seems to argue and, in the final analysis, that’s what will break us." It's that "one bloated point", the directness that you wrote about above, that has always made Bane seem a bit dull to me. I'm hoping the movie will gives us a more interesting, nuanced character.

Jim, you should watch Bronson. That is one amazing performance by Hardy.
