Saw Thor Sat, it was better then I thought it was gonna be. I didnt see it in 3D, kinda glad too! It didnt seem like it called for 3d.  The actors were all good and thankfully Thor wasnt flying around into the end credits!

I just got out from seeing it, so I won't get too much into it, but it was actually worse than I expected. I figured I would at least sort of enjoy it, but I actually almost fell asleep in it. Those times when I wasn't completely bored, I was pissed off by the amateur cinematography that felt the need to tilt every single shot (Battlefield Earth anyone?). I thought a lot of the humor worked and that Natalie Portman and Kat Denning(s?...the little we saw of her) were charming, but that's about it.

I thought that the only super cheesy shot was of Thor in the mud and rain screaming at the sky as the camera pans up and out.

Yea that was a bad one. The ones with all the slow motion and people running near the end were also pretty bad. 9/10 shots had tilted camera angled though. I can hear them talking it over right now: "this is a comic book movie, so every second shot has to be at 45 degrees. To make it dynamic!"

Could you make a thread or a blog or something of movies that you actually like ? 'Cause alot of the time I'm just in awe of the way you are capable of being so critical of everything. That's a genuine request by the way I'm really curious.

Hah. Well I'd be the first to admit that I'm much better at describing things I don't like over stuff I do. I'm not sure why I'm that way. I guess I just dwell more on the negative emotions over the positive. Whaaaat

And just for the record, I don't go into these movies expecting to be critical. I just walk out of a movie disliking it, and then I break down the reasons why it failed for me.

Oh and the special effects were bad. That's one more criticism for the road.  Wink

I saw this at the drive-in the other night and was actually surprised by how much I enjoyed it.  I expected it to be straight action and high drama but it was funny, sweet and goofy in all the right ways.  I thought Helmsworth was spot on as Thor - especially starting out as the entitled "act now, think later" beef cake.  Hiddleston was also great; Loki is the only villain in the movies so far that seems like he could challenge the Avengers.

Bring on Cap!

Edited to add in a question:
Does the last scene mean that Loki was the scientist guy the whole time?

Its just my opinion but I don't think so. He was just Loki at the end. Remember the scene at the bar when the scientist and Thor were having drinks? He says something along the lines of 'don't hurt Natalie Portman' or 'I don't want her to get hurt' or whatever. I don't know how that would serve Loki's purpose.

Initially, I didn't even think he was the scientist at all, just someone who followed him to the meeting place. But he might've been Loki during the after credits scene and might be Loki in the Avengers movie.

A great bit of casting all around and a fine job by Mr. Brannagh.  I was very happy with this flick all around.

I saw Colm Feore's name in the credits and couldn't figure out who he was (he a local in these parts and a semi-regular at the Stratford Festival).  Turns out he played Ymir - and did so well.

Same here, Paul! I love me some Feore--love the shape of his round, round head.  So when I saw his name, I was like--WHERE?! So then I assumed he was under tons of makeup as the frost giants' boss, cuz Colm don't play second string.  Rock Horns

I asked this in the other thread, lemme ask it here--

Didn't anyone think
the guy Thor was mudfighting with was Luke Cage?  That was like a videogame boss-fight, he looked JUST like him (sorry Old Spice Guy) and I think he had more screentime than Hawkeye.

That makes sense.  Hopefully it's all explained in Avengers.

I thought it was as close as a movie could get to being good without actually being good. There was a ton of Kirbyism in it (which I liked), including some stuff that wasn't in the Thor comics. The Boom Tube. The monster from issue 3 of Captain Victory. I'm glad they attempted the stiff starched Kirby cape, but they didn't quite nail it. With so much Kirby kontent in the movie, I was disappointed to see his name listed last after Stan Lee and Larry Leiber.

It made me hungry for a New Gods movie.

I don't think it would've been too much trouble if Brannagh had someone refer to him as
Luke or Lucas. If that scene somehow contradicts any future Luke Cage movies then at least they can say "well we just called him Luke/Lucas, it could be another Luke/Lucas and not necessarily Cage". And if it could be connected to any future movies then great stuff!

Didn't really think you did. It's just sort of baffling to me.... I do actually have a friend who is a bit like that, but he has a problem with picking movies apart so thoroughly that they never have a chance. I blame the English Department and his OCD personality.

I think the thing that makes it seem like he’s ‘possessed’ is the way he repeats Loki’s line.  I’ve been thinking about it and there are bits that could be argued for and against Prof being possessed the whole time.  In the 'for' column:

The Prof get’s Thor released from the SHIELD facility and therefore takes him away from his hammer.

Doesn’t he tell Thor to leave town in the bar scene?  Again away from the hammer and his power, keeping him on Earth and away from Asgard.

It’s a stretch but those could be arguments for...

Some good points. I'm still leaning towards
the professor only being possessed during the end scene. Thor was already in SHIELD custody and they already gave him a shot at the hammer and failed. Chances are he'd have been moved somewhere away from the hammer even if the scientist guy didn't interfere and him interfering eventually led to Thor becoming 'worthy' and regaining his power.

Still, I'm looking forward to rewatching it to see which theory fits better. I know some people who don't know much about comics didn't care for the after credits scene but I actually liked it a lot because it tied back to the movie (as opposed to just teasing the next one) and made you think back about some of the motivations of certain characters. The movie works without seeing it but seeing it made you rethink what you just watched.
