Dude! I just got lost for 20 minutes flipping back and forth through your process steps trying to pick up little tips. You know I absolutely adore your work... simply magnificent Mr. N. Out of curiosity, have you ever worked on any Dragonlance stuff in your freelance travels? Specifically the character Raistlin? I would LOVE to see your take on that gold skinned, frail but powerful mage. Karma my friend! the Tiki

I know I'm late to the party, but you killed it on that anatomical dragon work. Really cool stuff, Jim

Thanks to both of you. You're too nice! I'm glad you enjoyed the process stuff, Tim. I should have saved more of the steps for that one but I posted all I had. I haven't worked on any Dragonlance stuff, although Raistlin would be fun to paint. maybe I'll get the chance one of these days...

No worries. What you posted was perfect as I mentally dissected your steps. On a side note, I was at the Boston Comicon this weekend and was happy to discover that illustration legend Ken Kelly was there (didn't know he was scheduled). We talked Oil painting for about 40 minutes (over two discussions as I was circling the con). I learned SO much from those chats. Totally worth the price of admission for me! I really have to reread those books again. He is easily one of my favorite characters (is he a good guy or is he a bad guy.. Chaotic Neutral FTW ) the Tiki

I meant to reply to this days ago... sorry about that! No worries. What you posted was perfect as I mentally dissected your steps. We talked Oil painting for about 40 minutes (over two discussions as I was circling the con). I learned SO much from those chats. Totally worth the price of admission for me! That's awesome. You just can't beat those opportunities to really pick the brain of an accomplished artist you admire. I tend to learn a lot from those experiences and they always leave me pumped up to make new work!

Awesome, especially love the ogre, drew one last month for the first time, and really had a lot of fun. And I think the idea of a Buddha type idol is really a cool juxtaposition of fat and happy for a race that is generally presented as sloven and oafish. As usual your work is truly badass!

I appreciate that. I'm sorry I didn't reply until now. I forgot to check my own thread and didn't see your comment until today. I'm glad you liked the "fat, happy Buddha" approach I took with the piece. I wasn't sure if they'd let me go that route or if I'd have to stick with the sloven, oafish look but they encouraged the happiness and I think it worked out pretty well. I've always loved those happy little Buddha statues you can buy in Chinatown shops so I had a blast creating an ogre version.

Terrific as always. That's pretty much my nightmares come to life, too...Suckers. *shudder* Very nice translucent effect. And the guy looks properly terrified. You captured it in his eyes.
