Nice job David and Steve! The highlight of my week is joining in on the Marvel Comics love!

Indeed, they did make a BEAST issue of the X-men one-shots you were talking aboot, David. In fact, I think the BEAST and ICEMAN one-shots were the best of the group. I don't have time to re-read many of the comics I get every month, but those two were definite repeat reads. I'm happy to mail my copy of the BEAST issue to you, as long as you promise to put it at the top of your "read" pile!

Once you finish this listen of Smash Tales, you might head over to the Wikepedia page for the Marvel Try-Out book. We announce the winners of the Marvel Try-Out contest in this episode,
but it's disappointing to find out the fate of the winners and the work that never saw print.
Here's a link to the page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Try-out_Book

This episode marks the return of Marvel greats
The Sensational She-Hulk and The Avengers (West and East Coast). The last time we saw She-Hulk was back in Incredible Hulk #283, in the "Follow the Leader" storyline. This multi-issue arc was not only the very beginning of Smash Tales, back when I had just jumped from leaving voicemails to recording .wav files, but it also was the beginning of my comics fandom. I had no knowledge of the heroes and villains of the Marvel U back then, so this story was my first introduction to The Avengers, which had a very solid lineup in this story. The last time we saw The Avengers was back in Incredible Hulk #300, when they fought the green goliath to a standstill, and Doctor Strange exiled our hero to the crossroads.
There have been a lot of changes since then, for all of our heroes, so I'm thankful you've all been here with me during the journey.

To correct an error in the last episode: Questprobe had been reported at $4.99 for your home computer, but this PC game is actually $24.88 for most systems. These include the Amstrad CPC, Apple II, Atari 8-bit, TI-99/4A, Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum computers. Check your local Sears department store for selection and availability.

Without further delay, here are the images associated with this week's Smash Tales!

I'm only halfway through but before I forget...

That was your best Smash Tales yet.  Great voice work, great commercials (I thought I was a kid again there a few times), and just an overall great presentation of some fun comics.  You  guys rock.  Not Worthy

Fun fun fun fun FUN!!!

Tell me WHY I love the way Smash says "pink"?!  Colonel made Wonder Man sound like the head alien guy in the Tim Allen sf-comedy "Galaxy Quest"! Poor Simon! Can a resurrected ionic tank get some love up in this piece?! Roll On Floor Laughing  Such a treat to hear the original ditties from my Saturday Morning Cartoon commercial breaks!! Y'all shoulda seen me singing along with "hankering for a hunk of cheese...!" at the 1 train platform at 59th! FUN!!!!  And such a treat too to hear a father and son enjoying their time together. Thanks as always for bringing us in!

Raker; "Kirby's noodling on Asgardian armor and accoutrements."   Hearts Hearts Hearts  Three years, Steve Raker?  Hug

David, it took me up until you said "Jean Grey" that I realized who 'Marvel Girl' was.  What has happened to my mind??  The first Marvel Girl I thought you refered to was Valeria Richards in the Claremont/Larocca FF era.  THEN I thought you were refering to Rachel Summers, possibly in space.  Joshua Hale Fialkov is one of those bittersweet people in my head -- way before I met any of you guiys, I used to hang out at FanBoy Radio forums and Fialkov, before any of his stellar work, was a regular member there.  Now he's moved on and is just this luminary in the bizness, and it's sad that the inevitable distance has settled in.  But oh well. It's not like we were as close as I am to, say Smash or Steve or David or Sampsa or Farrell or Matt HOWL or ... or ... or ... (<--your name goes there) so, yah.

Hey, also David, it was hard to hear Captain America trying to break bad--that's a little of what I struggled with in the new Power Man series that spun out of the Daredevil event.  It was a little too jarring, the jive talk. Whaaaat

Anyways, thanks for the offering!  ( I couldn't get it on iTunes, btw. Just a heads up.)

I just received word from Bill Mantlo's brother, Mike, that one of the few remaining copies of Mantlo: A Life in Comics is on its way to me and should reach me by Friday. I'm ready to record my retrospective right now, but I'd like to take a look at this before I record, just in case there's something essential there. I anticipate having it ready next week and submitting it to DAP in time for the 150th episode on May 30. I've already got a couple mp3 submissions, so if you want to write some words or get me a mp3, NOW is your last chance!

I plugged one of my favorite podcasts in this episode, The Retroist. Not only do they effectively amuse me, but they've actually scooped Smash Tales on more than one occasion. Back in March, I recorded the Hulk's return from the Crossroads and included a commercial for one of the ads in the comic, M.A.S.K. action figures and vehicles. While I had already begun making the show, a fe days later, the Retroist posted this. http://www.retroist.com/2011/03/30/shout-factory-and-fremantle-are-going-to-release-m-a-s-k/

A couple of weeks ago, the Colonel and I made the current episode, but before I could finish the editing and send it to David, the Retroist posted this. http://www.retroist.com/2011/05/13/time-for-timer/

It has happened on at least one other occasion, too. I don't know if they are psychic or have a spy in the Smash Cave, but if they scoop me again, I'm going to hire a P.I.!

That's crazy, Rick!

I've only gotten through the initial couple of minutes of Smash Tales this week, but it sounds great so far!

David, I've been reading those X-Men First Class-ish one shots, and while the Marvel Girl art was pretty neat by Platti (or whatever the heck his name was), and the cover was stunning by Cruz, the overall premise was a bit weak: to get her rage under control and her powers in check, she should leave Prof X's school and go sort it out on her own?  What's that school's mission statement, y'know? Not All There

The best of the bunch is the Angel/Iceman one....light in tone, Juan Doe interiors, Kirby monsters.....a nicely paced read...check it out! Thumbs Up

Well I couldn't wait any longer so I had to crack open the latest Marvel Noise and, as usual, was not disappointed.   Not Worthy   I have run out of superlatives for the excellent Smash Tales.  At this point, it is my favorite and definitive method of experiencing the hulk in all his glories.  The movies, TV shows and even comic itself pale in comparison.  Also enjoy the little nostalgic flashbacks to an era that has passed.  I never did get the Marvel Try-Out book because at the time it was just too expensive1.  Thanks for the hard work and for posting all the great images.

If I ran a bookstore, I think I would just put Super Steve's segment on a loop by my graphic novel section as an excellent tutorial for all the recent people who saw the movie (which I enjoyed).  It would be nice to take a little movie momentum and try to land a few new readers out of it.  Did you ever read the recent Willingham Warrior's Three (collection of which you mentioned)?  Interested in your thoughts as always.   Thinking

I also enjoyed the end, where we got a nice sized segment2 from the host.  I always think One Shots are a tricky beast at best.  Part of the lure of comics is the regular fixed installments of the soap operaesque melodrama.  The one-shot has to draw the line about being a substantial enough story so that it just doesn't feel like some filler.  I have grabbed a few but I tend to be more selective with them.  Glad you found paydirt.  Keep making mine Marvel Noise.

1$12.95!!!! and people think comics are expensive now.  I think that was still in the days when I was getting my comics via subscription and for that price I was likely getting 3 years worth of comics
2Although you can never have too much

I agree....Smash Tales Hulk is the definitive Hulk voice, depiction of puny Banner, etc.

Love the commercials, letters pages, etc., more than the drama itself......one of your best outings, Rick! Thumbs Up

That puny Hulk voice is indeed definitive. Really liked how Wonder Man was depicted too but I kinda have a grudge against him so I'm glad he didn't sound 100% competent to me. It's cool that I have this Byrne run in trade.

And on the Steve Raker front I picked up Gillen's Beta Ray Bill stories in a trade with all the Thor fever. I hope I enjoy it a lot.

For some reason, the Colonel decided to voice him that way. I had no idea in advance, and it was challenging to bounce dialog off of that "incompetent-surfer" voice, but I loved it! Mah boy has some talent, that's for sure!

I know you do, Steve! That's why I've been digging up the old PSAs and promos for the commercial break. Doing more ads from the comics weren't an option as A) there are fewer in this era of comics, and B) more of them are impractical for "acting out".

Thanks, Rabbit! The nostalgia is indeed palpable. You can still get copies of the Marvel Try-Out Book on eBay and other sites. If you get a copy, you can try it out  and get together with David to compare your work!

See you all for the 150th episode! Which ones of you will call in and congratulate David on 150 big ones? We'll find out soon. The Bill Mantlo segment is complete, so you just might get that, too! Thanks for the feedback, guys, and FARE THEE WELL!
