Just read The Stand #1.
What an easy read. Great art and paced really nicely. Cant wait for the 2nd. Nice character sketch section at the back.

The man just does not get enough credit for simply being a good writer.  One of the most interesting books I've ever read was King's book, "On Writing".  Two distinct books for the price of one, a memoir and also his view of how the craft of writing works in his mind; both stories very interesting and IMHO, both were back-handed statements to his critics that his work should be considered legitimate literary works.

I nominate "On Writing" for an upcoming 11 O'Clock Reading Challenge; definitely deserves to be in anyone's collection.

Great book. It almost made me want to try writing, even though he said it is really hard and I know I'm a horrible writer.

I really recommend the audio version. He reads it, and he has a great voice.

I need to re-read Ronin. I got it years ago when I joined the Sci Fi book club for the Preacher trades. I remember liking it.

From what I heard about Force Unleashed, the developers thought they could make a game where you can toss around star destroyers and that would distract players from the fact that there isn't much else.

I'm just jealous that Vince has a X Box and a Wii. I haven't been able to upgrade past my PSP and PS2.

On writing was an interesting exercise, but ultimately it comes down to...do you have the chops or not? I mean you can take painting classes for 30 years and never have the eye to land a gallery showing. Writing is one of those fascinating endeavors b/c everyone writes, and therefore summarily underestimates the combination of refined skill and blind luck that goes into becoming a successful novelist.

And I remember the thrill of picking up this issue on the spinner rack at the local 7-11; stuff like this really cemented me as a comic book fan for life.

I'd love an excuse to break out my copy, which has also been sitting, lonely and unread, on a shelf for a year.

-Speaking of Vince's continuous Star Wars talk, I finally read Rebellion with the Vector crossover. OMG, I'm just gonna wait till the trade, but once it's over, I'm gonna be following it on a monthly basis.
-David and co., interesting tidbit on Byrne. Never knew a lot about him other than reading Supes/Bats Generations 2. As for the Daredevil Omni, dang...glad I haven't bought it yet.

I really enjoyed this episode...looking forward to the next one as usual!

I was interested to hear Chris talking about how good LOCAL was issue to issue.

A year or so ago, I was talking about what a great experience reading Watchmen as it came out was, and that I felt the series is actually diminished a bit by being conveniently bound in one big volume.

Scott McCloud writes about how comic creators use "the space between the panels". What i find even more impressive is creators who know how to use "the space between issues". And it occurs to me that the lack of good use of the space between issues is what defines "writing for the trade" .

I think that could be the decision maker between buying a book monthly or waiting for the trade.

really nice job guys! indeed, legion of three worlds is a BIMONTHLY comic, something that i don't think was made very transparent by DC. so Lo3W won't finish until...april 2009. *suicide*

anyways. about yaoi. yaoi's a genre and subject heading, but not an art style. yaoi artists are greatly varied. saying that their anatomy is elongated and strange is liek saying that all superhero comics look the same and we know that's not true, yes?

 unfortunately, yaoi imports have the same sad curse and bad reputation as most manga. this is because companies tend to import mostly the crappiest artists/stories/etc in general, also they tend to be OLD (you'll see people dressed like they're in the 90s).  companies do this because getting the licensing to these is easier and cheaper than getting the sought after good stuff. it's only very recently that companies have started importing higher quality and very recent lines because they realized "hey, these sell like hotcakes!". the yaoi genre is a hard sell. but, imports are slowly getting better. for better art, try works by: Homerun Ken, Kazusa Takashima, and Lily Hoshino, all three of which have been brought over and translated and you can find on amazon.

there are also monthly compilation magazines that specialize in different subgenres of art styles, like more um... masculine looking men rather than very pretty looking men, for example, but these haven't been translated and brought over as far as i know.
