Not so much something I heard, but something I saw...
A few years back, a friend was standing in a portfolio line when Jason Millet (my
Athena Voltaire colorist, and a terrific illustrator/cartoonist/storyboarder, as well) and I stopped to chat. Jason showed our friend a copy of a
Heart of Juliet Jones trade paperback and the three of us just sat there, drooling over Stan Drake's masterful draftsmanship and gorgeous rendering.
The kid behind us in line, hearing us raving about "lush linework" and "amazing figure drawing" and "able to draw
anything," cranes his neck, nonchalantly, to see what had all of us so hypnotized...
The look on his face was as if he discovered a turd in a punchbowl.
I'm the only one of us that saw it, and we continued to gush. And gush.
Pretty soon, the kid cranes his head again. I'm sure he thought something like, "Maybe I missed something. This may be cool if these guys are getting so worked up by this book."
Same reaction.
