I'm not really a fan of any other Manga I've read. I own Domu and a few volumes of Lone Wolf and Cub, but everything else I've tried throughout the years has left me cold.
Akira, I read about once every 2 years in it's entirety, I never get tired of the scope of it and the gorgeous artwork. Anyone have any suggestions of something along the same lines? Or is it simply that much of a cut above the rest that nothing really compares?

Akira really is just that far above everything else... but Pluto gives it a run for its money. Definitely check that one out.

Thanks for the suggestion, I believe the show has mentioned Pluto before. I'll definitely give it a shot.

Have you tried any of Masamune Shirow's work, like Appleseed or Ghost In The Shell? I quite like them.

I did own the Anime of Ghost in the shell. But don't believe I ever got around to reading it. Can't recall the movie really lighting a fire under my ass to read it. Akira was actually so confusing that I felt compelled to track down the source material, and I was very glad that I did, considering the movie was just a fraction of the tale. |

Yeah, obviously the comics are going to be of greater depth than the movies, (or manga/animae if you prefer the distinction). What's good about Shirow's work is that there's a lot of international political shenanigans framing his action, as well as all his philosophical explorations of what it is to be human and that man-machine interaction. Pus I really like his art.
It's not manga, but if you liked Akira, I can't help but think you'd also enjoy DMZ by Brian Wood. I just discovered it myself, but can see parallels between the two, especially the back half of Akira.

I don't think the last volume of the series is finished (but I haven't checked in over a year) but the Neon Genesis Evangelion story by Viz is a great retelling of the anime in a more streamlined, quicker format. And everyone should hear the Evangelion story in some form.

pluto and 20th century boys are great. i also love the movie metropolis. everything else ive tried wasnt my cup. ill keep looking but by contrast everything french i pick is I'll fourth all of this. I'm not a big fan of Manga story-telling tropes but Pluto was awesome. |
