You should change the name to "Old Man Neseman Complains" Tongue

Be nice. You don't want to make him cry, again.

Never saw the ending to that story coming, but it was a trip!  Probably was good preparation for things like "Lost" and Grant Morrison. Wink

Yeah, it's one of those endings that really kicks your ass when you think about it.
Everything Gilgamesh worked for in his entire life falls apart, and he's completely forgotten in the future, negating everything he ever did.
I have always said that if that book came out 10 years later from Vertigo, it'd probably be hailed as a modern classic rather than forgotten quarter bin fodder.

Boy do I love this show!
Where else can you here guys talking about, "the pros and cons of splash pages(complete with a "splash page conspiracy theory"), "do house styles exist in todays comics?", " the wide screen approach", "the unsung heroes of American magazine illustration" , "Manga aint all that", praise for bitchin' artists like Davis, Ramos and Justiniano. (Hey Woody, are you looking at the SAME Justiniano that I'm looking at?) and a general good vibe all around?

All in one episode! Kudos!

Justiniano's work totally blows my mind.  I can totally see the Wrightson comparisons, especially early Wrightson, like his work on Nightmaster.

Forgive me, I haven't listened to the episode yet and probably won't get the chance to until next week...

Is this in regards to the Doctor Fate series?

Could one of you guys smack Wood upside the head?  Hmmm?  Please?

I tell you when I first saw his work back on the Beast Boy mini, I really wasn't that thrilled, but since Day of Vengeance, he's just gotten better and better and I think he's hit some real heights with his Doctor Fate work, actually getting a lot of character subtlety to go with his off-the-wall layouts...

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Justy's work, but I don't think he's anywhere near the same class as Bernie Wrightson.  IMHO, I think his artwork is a balanced mix of Scott McDaniel's early work with a good helping of Michael Golden thrown in for flavor.  Even this mix yields some quality pedigree material though!  Thumbs Up

Wood, I love you, but you are SO wrong about Justiniano. I've followed him since he was drawing for Chaos and the man just got better and better through the years.

His Creeper stuff was gorgeous.

I can respect that y'all love Justiniano, but I don't. Can't help what please my eyes...I'm also not a fan of Frank Quitely or Mike Allred particularly; and I know most people love them, too.

That's what's great about art, it's subjective and what wows someone could do nothing for someone else; and vice versa.

Listening to the episode again...

Chris,

Regarding the Early Image guys and drawing for OA sales a couple things should be noted (that I think debunks that). Let's take Todd McFarlane whose pages go for the most (on average) than any of the IMAGE guys. It was still in the late 90's (well past the IMAGE boom) when McFarlane was selling his pages for hundreds of dollars. Now to people who don't buy OA that sounds like a lot, but it isn't at all and you are now going to pay several thousands dollar for a nice Mcfarlane page. It hasn't been until somewhat recently that OA has become a real force to where your theory would hold true IMHO.

It should also be noted that these guys were the guys that outside of a few people in comics history made real money for themselves and quickly. IMAGE was a financial monster, so much so you always hear Mcfarlane talk about some of those guys they brought in later who disappeared having never seen a check like they did (I think he mentions Keown and Stroman a lot but don't quote me) - if we were going to talk about the 5 most successful guys in comics history (from a pure dollars vantage - and especially if we are not talking people like Stan Lee who had to be here for half a century) - Lee (Jim) and McFarlane are probably on that list and I just don't think, considering the money we are talking, practice of drawing for the OA market wouldn't have created enough money to make it matter to them. We should we remember we are talking about a time when an IMAGE books would be bullshit if it sold 200k+ copies - these dudes were selling a couple times that a lot and they owned everything.
