I don't know if this thread has stalled out due to apathy or my challenge. Here is the best Christmas song of all time. It's my thread. I'm right. The Kinks-Father Christmas. I really love this song.
http://www.youtube.com/v/CjaPXihbORk&rel=1If you can't link out of The Kinks you either don't care or this thread has run it's course. I hope it goes on for a while. Bean P.S. This is my 2000 post. Only 1000 more and I am guaranteed a spot in the Hall of Fame (if we use the standards of The Baseball Hall of Fame). P.P.S. Pete should be in the HOF. I'm just saying.

There would not be a Paul Weller without Ray Davies. http://youtu.be/pZj4NglEPUIThe Jam - "David Watts" (The one and only time I saw The Kinks live was in 1983; the setlist included this song which was much more in line with The Jam's cover than the band's own original.)

Well played. Those first 5 Goo Goo Dolls LPs were so good before they crapped out.
Bean
I actually heard some of their earlier stuff the other day for the first time. It had a serious Replacements vibe to it. I was really surprised and liked it a lot. I'll go for the bonus. Randal was singing King D. in Clerks 2.

IMO, Weller wrote some of his most stunningly perfect songs while he was in Style Council with Mick Talbot, between "Cafe Bleu" and "Our Favourite Shop". Here is one from that period: "My Ever-Changing Moods".

http://www.youtube.com/v/Pm3Q18XYVLA&rel=1One of the greatest songwriters of a generation of great songwriters. I could not agree with you more!!! It is a shame that even some Weller fans dismiss the Style Council. Certainly his best ever love songs came out of his fronting that group. And in certain ways, TSC were far more subversive than The Jam ever were. Here are two of my favorites from that early period you cited. http://youtu.be/MbrA4E4hupc"A Stones Throw Away" - The Style Council http://youtu.be/fZQe-N033YY"(When You) Call Me" - The Style Council ... and to keep in this thread's tradition of "betcha didn't see that one coming" here is another song from the 80's titled "Call Me" - http://youtu.be/KxmAFL768tA"Call Me" - Skyy

The Replacements REM's Peter Buck played on I Will Dare off the Replacements Let It Be LP. REM teamed up with Warren Zevon to form The Hindu Love Gods. Here are The Hindu Love Gods covering Prince's Raspberry Beret. I played the hell out of the first Hindu Love Gods 7" back in the day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQmz8Cx8pbM...which takes us back to Minneapolis....

My band used to cover "I dont wanna be james Dean" off of Goo Goo Dolls album Jed. Are you including A Boy Named Goo in your 5 list because I think after Super Star Car Wash they went down hill. Travis

Goo Goo Dolls (1987)[26] Jed (1989) Hold Me Up (1990) Superstar Car Wash (1993) A Boy Named Goo (1995)
In a vacuum, A Boy Named Goo holds up. When you know what came afterwards, it is dragged down. Hold Me Up is really my last favorite LP.

Staying with the Mineapolis theme. Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman began working with Prince in the 1980s before forming the duo Wendy & Lisa in 1986, Wendy and Lisa- Waterfall. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdfAhCG3oDoI don't stray into pop to often, so take advantage of the opportunity. Bean
