So who are your personal one-hit wonders? Not guys that actually only had one hit (Im looking at you Lou Bega) but writers/artists/characters that you really liked one time, but each time you return to re-sample them, it doesnt work for you.
I can imagine it happening with a writer, or a character/comic title.. not sure if it could happen with an artist since if you like the way they draw that doesnt drastically change from job to job...
Here's one for me.
Brian Wood. Love. Love. Love DMZ. Only thing Ive ever double dipped for more than 6 issues. Love Matty, love the story, love every god-damn thing about that book.
But thats it... everything else... Northlanders? Nope New York 5, way nope. Demo? at bets eh... nothing captures that love I have for DMZ...
So who's on your one hit wonder list? What made you love them, and what didnt cut it?

War machine. I loved the character when he was in Iron man as the replacement and his arguing with Tony all the time. But since the Crew, the character hasn't been the same. Not saying the Dark Reign maxi-series wasn't good but it just didn't click the same.

Probably gonna get a few boots for this (and I'd like to emphasize the personal part of the thread title), but the one who immediately jumped to mind was Robert Kirkman. I thought Walking Dead went from competent to slow to b-b-b-boring fairly quickly, and Invincible (and it's spin-offs) never really clicked for me.
But god damn if The Destroyer isn't one of the best comics I've ever read. It's like a pure-distillation of everything that makes comics pulpy fun, and without resorting to overt winking and nudging. It's not a graphic novel, or sequential art or any of that, it's just a good old-fashioned comic book. It really did feel like the epic conclusion to a long-running series, and is just a brilliant bit of condensed story-telling. Great stuff.

Geoff Johns... Sinestro Corp War or whatever it was called blew my socks off... the GL stuff I've read since? Not so much.
I do want to give his JSA run a try though...

This was the second guy who came to my mind... but then I remembered that I did like Golden Age so I decided to give him a pass. Less one hit wonder, more one big hit, one little hit for me... and again this is PERSONAL one hit wonders, so Im not gonna fault anyones personal tastes (though give me some meat on the bone, what about Sentry did you like, and then not? Im assuming it was Jenkin's first run that you loved, and everything else (i.e. Civil War) that you didnt?)

Mark Millar. I liked Ultimates, but nothing else ever clicked for me and his Spider-Man run was horrible.

I have been saying this for years, if you ever stumble across Robert Rodi & Esad Ribic's 4 Horsemen... grab it immediately! Such a great commentary on the turn of the millennium! the Tiki

Same with me, except it's his Wolverine run, not his Ultimates run.

I liked his Ultimates run as well as Superman Red Son. Wolveine and Spiderman were just okay.

So far Grant Morisson. JLA was cool, the rest goes from average to terrible for me. But I like his ideas in All-Star and giving him a shot on Action.

For writer it is GM for All Star Superman. I tried his entire Batman run until Batman 702, the first 6 issues of Batman & Robin plus Final Crisis but it just was not for me. (Sorry GM lovers but I didnt like it). I hope he can do something unique for the Man of Steel yet still makes sense & work within a monthly series.
Aquaman is a one hot wonder, I read an annual I liked & that is about it.
I enjoyed Steve McNiven's art very much on the rebooted Spider-Man opening arc.

This for me as well. I find it so hard to put together how the same writer who wrote the ultimates so compellingly is barely competent anywhere else.

I'm kinda the opposite in a way. His JLA run was the only thing I didn't really care for that I've read of his so far.

James O'Barr: I'm surprised that I'm the only one who ever references The Crow on this forum, maybe it is a generational thing (I was a teen when the movie came out, the graphic novel rocked my world). I had listed him previously on the "greatest influence, smallest body of work" since he really changed the esthetics of comics (dark, gothic, urban) and made comics movies really viable. That said... one hit wonder. Maybe I'm wrong... whatevs.
Doomsday Seriosly... he broke teh supes but never amounted to much after that. Since then he has been revived, cloned, whatever, is probably a born again christian right now living out of a trailer and selling shoes.
