Wood! These are the things that I do for my friends.

I love Chris like a brother and if curling makes him happy, then I want to take part in that enjoyment with him. Who knows, maybe I'll love it and start curling...Andy's already trying to get me to join a the Fort Wayne league

Wow...got me all choked up Z.  Me...I'm just in it for the potential opportunity to go have some beers and hang out with my pals.  Also, the concept of game has piqued my interest and I really want to learn more about it.

Oh...& we're gonna "try out" curling before joining the FWCC (Fort Wayne Curling Club).

He once refused to sign an autograph or take a picture with a friend of mine, because he thought my friend had asked him to wear a Wicket mask.

But, in reality, Austin did not ask him to wear the Wicket mask. Austin wanted to wear the mask himself, while in the picture with Peter Mayhew.

I'm such an idiot. I heard David talking about Will Shetterly & Captain Confederacy. I thought to myself "eh, I don't know about this but I know I've read Shetterly comics before. It has that alternate US feel of some of the Grendel stories, I'll check out that blog and download..."

Click onto the blog and right there for me to see plain as day is Will Shetterly writer of Dogland.   I love that damned book, I don't know why I didn't connect the two. I guess I had comics on the brain and not novels.

As for the "racism" in the book, one need only do a tiny bit of research to find that Shetterly is not a racist but does revisit those themes within his stories. Dogland is no exception. Highly recommended. I expect VINCE to love that book too. It starts off unassuming, but then progresses into this large story with big concepts.

I want to say more but the joy of that book was the realization of "wait a minute...that is fucking awesome!" Some of the cool stuff is subtle some not but its a damned good story.  

DAP will like Dogland too, because there's doggies in it. Lotsa doggies.

I read The original Captain Confederacy back when it first came out but did not get the Epic issues.  I'll have to download them and re-visit the material.  Thanks to David for pointing out this link.  There are so many forgotten or partially remembered great books from the era of the Black and White explosion that it would be cool to see this as a regular feature on the podcast.

I am unfamiliar with Dogland.  I'm checking to see how much for a Kindle edition.

I've wondered the same thing about man Vs food. He must be on a hefty regime of speed and exlax in between episodes. Because I can't picture that dude on a treadmill.

He actually exercises alot while doing the show... is the response I had seen when he was questioned about his health by fans concerned that he was killing himself for entertainment.

Apparently the newest season is going have him playing host while guests perform the actual challenges because of potential health concerns. Who knew eating a hamburger the size of a tractor tire was bad for you?

I finally read League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 1910 (2 years on a shelf) and I am halfway through 1969... I am enjoying them but honestly I really miss the original cast to the point that it's lessening my enjoyment slightly.

Any opportunity to look at Kevin O'Neill's work is a welcomed one though.

David, have you read any of the Deadlands comics or any of the RPG?  Deadlands has a similar premise of Captain Confederacy, but heavy steampunk.

Heath constantly quotes Samuel Clemons throughout Fear Agent.  And he has done plenty of things that could be considered reprehensible, to the entire galaxy.

I never pay for celebrity autographs at cons, but I always try to go the celebrity panels.  That's why they are there at con rather than just selling those autographs through a website or a broker.  The stories that the has-been celebrities tell are soooo fun.  Last year at DragonCon Luke Perry told some funny stories about the Fifth Element, for example.

I appreciated your question, Mr. Neseman! I don't know if I tweeted this or said it elsewhere, but part of my experience with the Captain America movie was that I decided Marvel's movie Earth WAS a better place than our Earth.  I cant say it happened for sure, but it does seem that someone decided that race relations in MarvelMovieU was better, and that was that. No explanations necessary. I haven't read other posts here yet so I dunno how others feel. So yeah, I appreciated the King and Wood's answers!  I'm sad that it sobered Wooooode up and he got all knightly to give his feedback (because all the way up to this you wuz actin' a FOO', Brah!! I wuz LOVIN' it!!), but I'm also happy that it mattered enough.  I guess what I liked the most was the respect given to the topic at hand.

So what I heard you all say was that if you're reading a historical piece, it should be like taking a trip in the TARDIS. You step out into that world, it should be that world.  Any alterations for any reason would be wrong on many levels.  And I hear you. In fact, some of the historical Doctor Who stories drove me crazy for that reason, case in point, "Daleks in Manhattan" (for those who saw it).

Now, if I were on the TARDIS crew and he took me to America in the 1700's, simply stated, I wouldn't leave the TARDIS. That episode would be Alan-light and the actor portraying me would have a vacation for that story arc. Because I'm not having anyone call me nigger to my face, I'm not having anyone treat me like property, and I'm not taking the lash of a whip for anything less than the redemption of mankind.

So yeah, go ahead and let creators accurately portray the ignorance and the hate, and the wholesale slaughter. The genocide of a captured people's culture. The continuing, seething, unrepairable, generational racism spinning into perpetuity. (Hello, can you say Miles Morales anyone? Yeah, it is 2011 but hey. Whatever.)  Do it. Preserve that stuff in grand pristine order. Maybe somebody will learn something. Or maybe they won't. Maybe they have. Maybe they haven't.  Who knows! 

But I'm not reading it. I don't want to see it or hear it. I don't like it. I never will. I don't need that particular lesson taught to me and I don't like being angry, which is what it makes me.

That being said, King, when you first said "Captain Confederacy", I wanted to kiss my iPod screen (I didn't because I was at the gym and they look down on such things). You took me back, man! I was THERE. It came along with Southern Knights, Elementals, Mage ... all the forefathering indies.  And THANK you, because I needed that trip in the wayback machine for very specific, storytelling reasons RIGHT NOW. Right now. (watch me this time next year, y'all).

So, yeah!  Thanks again for the thought-provocation! The excellence continues!
