This brings up an interesting point...

Let me preface this by saying that after listening to the podcast over the last few months I know what the 4 guys are about and never in a million/billion years would I ever consider any of them to be even the slightest bit racist. It's not even a question.

However, a few weeks back my wife, who is black, came into the room while I was listening to an older episode and Wood was getting excited about a comic or some nonsense and he shouted "Aaaah, YEAH! Hook a brotha up!" Till that point I never though much about how often, as New Mutant put it, the guys start "actin' a FOO!" on the show, but with my wife sitting there I cringed a little. I asked what she thought when she heard white guys talking like that and she responded that she's used to it. I mentioned that Jason is big on hip-hop and blaxploitation so it wasn't meant to be derisive or mean-spirited; he just talks that way when he's excited, and her reply was "It's like Paul Mooney says: white folks can't let the black community have anything. You see us having fun and you gotta come in and take it."  Cheesy Cheesy

Please keep in mind that this woman has referred to me as a "cracker ass cracker" and will often state that all white people look the same to her, so she truly isn't angry at Wood or anybody else, but I just thought it was interesting to hear her take on it. Food for thought, I guess.

You know, I respect everything you said and shared in this thread.  Thumbs Up

I guess I've never thought about my use of colloquialisms because they're...genuine?  What I mean is I don't know how, when or why I started using slanguage, but I did and have forever. It's not fake. As you guys notice, when I'm at my most relaxed, just chilling with my closest friends, it's when I start letting it fly. I LOVE hip hop, always loved black pop culture, and never really analyzed it beyond that. I kind of felt like I was the MTV generation and you were either a kid that ran home to watch Fab Five Freddie or you waited for Headbangers Ball, and never the twain shall meet. Smiley

Man, I really hope my slang and relaxed talk is never taken the wrong way. I've never even considered it might.  Thinking

Spider-Man 3 is really good.  Even with Dunst stinking up the joint times three and the Sandman/Spidey connection, the trilogy is fun stuff.

It dawned on me the other night that the reason SPIDER-MAN 3 didn't connect with a lot of people is that Raimi threw in homages to all his favorite genres and eras of film, which is what made it feel disjointed. You've got Cary Grant-style screwball romantic comedy, musicals, Jerry Lewis movies, 50's sci-fi and horror, film noir/crime pictures (watch it in black & white and more of that stuff comes through) - all mixed in with very modern FX. I love it for all those reasons. It's unfiltered Sam Raimi.

I get it completely. It's hard not to pick up slang when you're immersed in a culture. First two cassettes I ever bought with my own money were ZZ Top's Eliminator and a breakdance tape with Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, Newcleus, Africa Bambata and Whodini. This was in sixth grade. I started watching blaxploitation films in high school and would quote lines from BLACK BELT JONES and DOLEMITE. To this day I still say things are dope or respond to someone with "word". Once I started dating my wife though I became very self-conscious about that kind of stuff, so me picking up on your use of slang has more to do with my hang-ups (not to mention the experiences with my friends I mentioned) than feeling that you weren't being genuine or were being derisive. Please don't think that I was implying that because it would be hypocritical of me to do so.

Maybe I just have too much white guilt.  Cheesy

I thought the Doc Ock hospital scene in Spidey 2 was unfiltered Raimi.

Preach. Most the hate sent that movies way is hive mind group think. It's heads and shoulders over plenty of other action flicks out there. I would have liked a better Goblin Jr outfit, a different or no take on Venom, and that dance scene was terrible, but other then that it's just as good as Spidey 1.

Vince being anti espionage cracks me up. I don't share the sentiment but for some reason I find it adorable when Vince talks about his indifference to spy stories.

Indeed. That was definitely the horror side of Raimi coming through. I think though that he's very similar to his friends the Coen Brothers in that he loves all genre of film and classic Hollywood so part 3 was not just the horror stuff but all that other influence coming out.

What kills me is when people say it failed critically because there were too many villains, as though that alone would ruin a superhero flick. BATMAN BEGINS, THE DARK KNIGHT, and the first two X-MEN movies (I pretend the third one doesn't exist) all had multiple villains and yet somehow managed to be well regarded. But yeah, people who have trouble articulating their emotional reaction to a film hear why someone else didn't care for it and it's "Yeah, yeah. What he said. Too many villains."

The problem with Spider-man 3 is Topher Grace.  He was terribly miscast as Eddie Brock.  He would have made a great Peter Parker.  Eddie Brock needed a separate movie.  Also forcing Gwen Stacey in the movie and not really using her.

The action scenes are great and James Franco and Thomas Haden Church both do great.  Avi Arad is to blame for the problems in the movie.  He pushed for Venom to be in it.

You noticed that, did you?

Well guess what? It went on for about another 40 minutes after he stopped recording. What can I say? I didn't want to get off the phone with my buddies the other night.
