I see a lot of people giving it the "Criminal" feel, but I don't feel it. It reads a lot like an Elmore Leonard novel. You get just what you need to know and BOOM someone is in the middle of some shit.

I love criminal, but this just has a different...character. Like you said it is different. Both top notch books though. My only choice now is singles or wait for trade.
Elmore Leonard?  You just got my attention.  Thanks Bob.

Agreed but that should not take away from the genius of Check Your Head .  In a vacuum, it is a work of pure genius but if you compare it to Paul's Boutique, it is an inferior LP.

OKAY O HOLY F*CK WHAT THE HELL THE MUSIC INTERSPERSED THIS WEEK, CONVERSATAION SEGMENTS WTF'INGAWESOME!!?!!

I hope Mr. Remender comes by here and gets his lurve. Jason as John-The-Baptist was a SCREAM. See Jason? I could take Thundercats' Snarf being a talking sentient cat only if David did the voice. (At 11:00 until show close!!)

Morrison's Action Comics might end up doing for Superman what Dark Knight Returns did for Batman.
end up being only 4 issues long? and then being remembered as something far greater than it actually was? being responsible for everyone whining about the new "grim and gritty" direction of comics when it's the same as it was before? or just weigh the character down for 25 years? have morrison return to this version of the character a couple decades later and put out a sucky follow up?

just f'n with you, i hope supes become relevant again, too.

Great Elmore comparison, never would have thought of that!

I haven't listened to all of #177 yet but I had to give Chris a shout-out. Anchor Steam rules indeed!  Rock Horns I was obsessed with their Liberty Ale in the late '90s...it was the most ridiculously hopped beer I'd tasted in '97-'99. I wonder if it's still the hoppiest...Anchor Steam's never been the cheapest beer in the cooler but it's never felt like a rip off when I purchase it. I save it for celebrations...my flatmate in Seattle's Fremont hood back in the late '90s would often cook with Liberty, usually chicken IIRC.

I am on the email list for Full Throttle Bottles, a specialty beer/cider/wine/soda shop in Seattle's southern Georgetown hood (a short drive from our place in the Hillman City hood). The featured cocktail in this list message made me think of Monsieur Neesman...cheers!

As stupid as it sounds, I rarely see Anchor Steam any where nowadays. Yes I'm in so cal and that's North Cal, but still...

If I wasn't meeting a freind of mine & ex employee for a drink at  a brewery tomorrow, I'd go on a trek to find some for tonight's game (yes I'm old enough to need to space out my drinking on work nights)

QFT! Love that run. Would love to see that given the Omnibus treatment.

I believe that most of the Seventies and early Eighties defender issues have been collected in Marvel essentials format - of course if you want your collections in color than you are still out of luck...

I feel safe in saying that I am probably one of the biggest Gary Erskine fans in North America   Thumbs Up (can't speak for Europe since that's his hood  Cheesy) and have been following his work since the early Knights of Pendragon days onwards. I have always loved the level of detail that goes into his work, even when he is onboard as only the inker of a book (such as some of his work on Thunderbolts), however everything I have seen from him working off of Vietch's pencils has so far left me underwhelmed like there is not enough there for him to put his stamp on or something. I avoided the Army at Love series for this reason until picking it up in TPB form recently for cheap at a con. My feelings on that were the story was passable and worth a couple chuckles but not sure if I would pick up any subsequent trades since Erskine was not doing it for me on the book.

Now with The Big Lie, again I am seeing Erskine inking Vietch's pencils (you guys got mixed up there: Vietch is writer and penciler on the book with Erskine on inks) and not really feeling it. I don't care too much about the story but it isn't turning me off the book. I just hope that this is not a sign of things to come that I will be mostly seeing Erskine inking Vietch, because if so I might be holding off on pulling the trigger on his future stuff.  Thinking
