Sounds like you are thinking of Arch Enemy, the 3 vs 1 format using scheme cards to even the odds. Either that or your friends are douchebags like mine... they are not shy about going 3vs1 on a free for all fight. Commander is a deck of 100 cards with no repeats (except basic land of course) and you have a legendary creature set aside who you cay pay to summon at any time, but each time you summon it, it costs 2 more mana. Also everyone gets 40 health. It is a big, unpredictable game with cards from dozens of sets and often has a big global cards like Wrath of God. You're correct, my bad. I never liked any variations of the basic game. Two headed monster, Arch enemy... I like head to head combat. My little brother is the superior player and I have raised my children to try and beat him. My oldest son was lacking but my eldest daughter is getting there....... My little bro may be that douchebag player you refer to.

Hows everyone liking how the block finished out with Avacyn? I find myself using the two green miracle cards in my weenie green white deck a lot. Love the added suspense of having them in there if I don't draw into them starting hand. Also the soulbonds green werewolf and or white paladin for double strike is pretty killer attached to my Skin Shifters especially with a spirit mantle. Also pretty excited about M13.

In real life me and my friends got into commander, I bought two of the Boxed commander products and we spent an afternoon building commander decks from his crazy collection of cards (dude has the longboxes). I'm digging that format, it is made for 4 player free for all which is my favorite style of play, very strategic and political.
I actually got into Commander/EDH a lot recently. I have not been hitting up FNM as much right now with so much craziness going on at home and instead getting together with some friends on a weekend afternoon and playing Commander or buying a box and doing a small draft together to get some limited. I bought a couple of the precon decks and just used some existing cards to swap some stuff out. I am buidling my first Commander deck from scratch, it is a monowhite deck with Darien, King of Kjeldor as my commander. Its a lot of fun finding cards to put in, there are some crazy powerful cards from the older sets that can actually get play in commander where they might not have seen much in the standard format. And for the most part its not too expensive. Keeping up with standard starts getting expensive after awhile, espcially since I play on MTGO as well. When a certain deck (this time Delver) gets so popular in standard, i get a little bored with it. I am never one to want to play the most popular deck so I like building stuff to combat it. But I am looking forward to M13 and the new set in the fall.

Anyone using Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012? It has a new expansion, boasts some innistrad cards and is overal a ton of fun, with fairly smart A.I.
Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 is out and this time it's on the iPad! This is what I've been waiting for. I spent time playing Shadow Era and loved it on the iPad but it will be nice to have some official MtG. Anyone playing it? I haven't downloaded it yet but I'm planning to this weekend.

Nice, I was gonna ressurect this thread, glad to see somebody beat me to it. An update on commander: my friend who owns the collection (we all just add to his) ended up getting the other 5 commander decks and we have built a few of our own. My big one is around Horde of Notions... most cards in that deck are changelings so once I get the commander out, he can keep recycling creatures and some spells such as crib swap. The other really brutal deck amongst us is Tom's "Olivia" deck which is a very aggro vampire deck that starts hurting people by the second turn. As for Avyacin I really liked it a lot... the miracles are a little wonky but those green miracles are brutal, I especially love the one that makes a creature like +6/+6 and everything must block it. The set has a lot of flavor and soulbound a nice mechanic, one I hope they return to because it is great for mounts, sidekicks, squires, etc. Our friend bought a box and pulled Tamiyo which was a nice bonus. As for the usual "resources for peple interested in playing but dont have cards..." I played the new Duels 2013 and it is great so far. I also redeemed my "free Sierra Avatar" which came in a 6pack including some new cards like Murder and Krenkos Command. Murder is great, it is BB1 for a "Destroy Target Creature". Also I push Forge a lot on you... here is the link to the current build which includes Avy and Planechase 2 cards. http://www.slightlymagic.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=7344They are having some minor bugs but the interfase and deck builder are a LOT prettier now and the quest mode is really fleshed out... you can actually buy boosters, fatpacks and preconstructeds.

Oh man, YES! My weenie deck is my only standard deck, but I LOVE my all Vamp deck with Olivia and Falkenrath Aristocrat. Tho i should take out the Aristocrats for 2 more Olivias since my deck has no humans... Anyways yea I love themed creature decks. I have a legacy Elf deck that is fairly ridiculous, the mana gen is bananas and many times i can cast the 8/8 hydra on like turn 3/4 bc of its 1 less to cast per creature combined with all my mana gen elves that get out early. I'll post them once I get them written down.

also, any good MTG podcasts?
I almost hope there isn't. I've been resisting getting back into the physical cards for some years now, a good podcast would surely suck me back in.

I play all sorts of things in Standard right now, post AVR I was playing UW Humans and RUG Pod. When I went to SCG Worcester I played UB Tezzeret Control for something different. But didn't do too well, ran into a ton of Esper Control decks, more than I expected. Figured I was much more suited for Aggro matchups. And my pet deck will probably always be RDW.
Legacy I play Tezzeret Affinity and I am building MUD.
Commander I have Kaalia deck and I am building the Darien, King of Kjeldor deck I mentioned earlier. Actually I am psyched some of the cards I ordered came in today so I am that much closer to getting it sleeved up and giving it a shot.
There are some really good podcasts and some really bad ones. I pretty much only listen to The Eh Team and Top 8 Magic with BDM and Mike Flores. If and when ChannelFireball puts out their podcasts which is pretty infrequent I listen to that as well. Some other decent ones I like but don't have the time to keep up with are In Contention and Limited Resources, the latter is fantastic around new sets as they give you the complete breakdown of each from a limited perspective which is perfect for pre-release events. If you go to MTGCast you will see a ton of options, there is a dearth of choices but a bunch of them are bad imo.

Any do any m13 pre release events? Did two sealed tourneys over weekend and was really fun. Sat was horrible and I couldn't manage a decent deck, but Sunday I ran well with a red, black, white exalted deck for 9th place. Top 16 paid out so I ended up with 9 additional boosters. Also ended up with a good score of cards. Ripped a red dragon foil mythy in the event and then the black mythy vampire from the adtl packs. Scored a foil rare of Stuffy Doll which is a cool card too.

Are any of you guys on Cockatrice? I just started playing Magic a couple days ago and Cockatrice seems like a perfect platform for practicing. The only problem I'm finding is the guys on there are not very open minded to someone who is trying to learn. I'm getting tired of being insulted and being accused of cheating because I might not completely understand all 457 billion rules. If anyone wants to play and wouldn't mind helping show me the ropes a bit, that would be awesome.

For learning I really recommend Forge, the ruthless computerized rules enforcement has rid me of many of my own bad habbits. Duels of the Planeswalkers is good for this too, but no deckbuilding feature is available. As far as cockatrice I like that program, it is fun and while there are douches on it, it has a much nicer population than most other random online games. I dont really do magic events but my friend Tom just got a fatpack and a box in the mail, so we are going to do some booster drafting and deck building on saturday. I'm looking forward to it, I LOVE 2013 for the same reason the "MTG Salvation crowd hates it". Creatures are less powerful, spells are better, lots of synergy and a few big werid win cards. Hopefully this is a sign of how the Ravinica expansion will look.

Forge didn't seem to like my pc much so I tried Cockatrice instead. I enjoyed duels of the planes walkers but I had read that it does some things incorrectly and I didn't want to develop any bad habits. Maybe I'll try to reinstall forge and get it working. Is forge only single player?

Did anyone go to the Return to Ravnica prerelease this past weekend? I could only play on Saturday but got a ton of gaming in with the new set, it was lots of fun. Found a new gaming store about 10-15 minutes away from my house and went there for their 10 am prerelease tourney. Chose Selesnya Guild (green/white) and took the 24+ person tournament down!!! Won about 20 packs of the new set and pulled some good stuff including a Jace. They did a second two-headed giant tournament afterwards that I stayed for and I made it to the finals with my teammate before losing. It was a long day of MTG but since I was going to be hanging out with my family on Sunday I wanted to get all the prerelease action I could on Saturday, came in 1st and 2nd in the two tourneys I played, got a ton of new cards and had a blast. This new set looks sweet and I can't wait till Friday when we start seeing the new decks that come out of the rotation.

My son went & played in & won the tourney (20 people) at the local shop. He won 10 packs, looks like your shop had better prizes! BTW, he's getting ready to sell off a bunch of my old cards since I don't play any more. Last year he sold a bunch & made about $2500. He figures there's another $4k or so to be gotten from another round of selling off the valuable cards I have left from Unlimited, Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Legends, etc.

Yea i went to my local pre-release but picked Izzet and then got almost nothing good out of my packs that fit the guild. Tried going Golgari with some splash but was just way outmatched. Very fun tho, and loved the guild boxes idea. split a box with a buddy last weekend and got a bunch of shock lands, which apparently are super hot right now so i was able to trade straight up one for one on a Vraska twice doing some trade grinding last night, and two for a Jace. i dont see them holding the 15-20 range for too too long so i think i got some great value and now i have 3 Vraskas to try and make a standard deck around

I'm hoping to go to a Modern GPT. The prize for 1st is either a hotel room in Chicago for the Grand Prix, or 3 boxes. I think I'd opt for the boxes, since I'm resonably sure I can take down the tournament, but not so sure about a full fledged tourney.
I also got one of my Steam Vents today, so that'll help matters some.

Unfortunately I dont do events but my friend Tom got his fat pack in the mail and will get his Box that he ordered today or tomorrow. We might do a friendly 4 or 5 person draft this weekend.
Also forge is updated with the new cards, like 260 out of 280 which is insane.
