Marvel really made a huge gamble with Joss Whedon and man did it ever pay off. Gotta give 'em credit for that.

Of course the Filmspotting podcast guy doesn't like it. He is stretching and pretty much making up reasons why he doesn't think it's good. I hate it when critics go against the grain for that reason alone, don't like a movie, but don't claim it's nothing but action with little character depth. WTF?

I myself can't wait to see it again

Like I said earlier, I saw last week and really enjoyed it. Hell, I'll probably try to see it once more before it disappears, but there were some things that bothered me.
1. Hawkeye was mostly irrelevant.
2. The movie sags in the middle. I don't have anything approaching a short attention span, but I thought most of the scenes in the Helicarrier could have been trimmed.
3. The whole thing about Agent Coulson's trading cards was unnecessarily sentimental. Everyone already knew and liked Coulson, so his death would have been enough to rally everyone. the blood-smeared cards thing was dumb.
4. The Chitauri could have been a little less anonymous.
5. the 3D sucked, but that shouldn't reflect on the movie itself. Just say no. Two dimensions is sufficient.

saw it last night and really enjoyed it, Whedon and the cast did a fantastic job. I haven't enjoyed any of the Marvel Studios films aside from Cap, i felt like this film took all the good bits from those and cut all the garbage out.

My one criticism of it would be basically that for as fun as it is, it's basically just a $200+ million dollar toy commercial/IP booster. It would of been nice if it had actually been about something. say what you want about the Nolan Batman films but at least they are actual films that have things to say while still being fun action movies when they want to be. As much as i liked the Avengers film, i just wish it had a little more story ambition than just "it's all THESE heroes TOGETHER in ONE FILM!!". That said, still a great time at the movies and i'll probably be seeing it again.

Comics were definitely happier, breezier and more confident in their own strengths before Hollywood and the Internet turned the business of writing superhero stories into the production of low budget storyboards or, worse, into conformist, fruitless attempts to impress or entertain a small group of people who appear to hate comics and their creators. - Grant Morrison

Loved it....most comic book-y, best super-hero summer action flick to date.  Reminded me of how I felt after seeing Independance Day in the theater. Great summer/popcorn movie.  In Joss I trust.

Oh my Thor was it an epic, awesome movie. It got right what the X-Men films couldn't. It gave a good amount of focus on each character being part of an ensemble cast. Even if Hawkeye had less screen time, it was more then what Cyclops got in the X-Men films.

I always knew about the scene during credits but heard that there was no scene after. I guess I'm goign to have to watch it again.

I also saw this after the Marvel Movie Marathon so the anticipation felt long but well worth seeing them all on the big screen. Though Incredible Hulk was not shown, not sure why. It was shown at AMC theaters but not at this Regal. But I got it on Blu-Ray and put it on before I went out.  Yes

I'd agree with the original X trilogy, but I thought First Class did a nice job with the core cast. I also think it was a better movie than Avengers. Avengers was a lot more fun though. It's not Citizen Kane, but it's a hell of a fun ride.

i wanted to chime in and agree with pretty much everybody; it was a GREAT and FUN movie! i was smiling and laughing all through out. being a marvel zombie, there were quite a few times where i was the only one laughing. (like tony's life model decoy answering service joke).

the helicarrier scenes ran a bit too long, but i understand the need for calm before the storm in the third act; not to mention time for the wonderful character interactions.

not sure how i feel about the tease for the new big bad at the end. its COOL seeing him, but i'm not sure i want him to be the villain in part 2. i would prefer a more down to earth villain, maybe get a glimpse of the masters of evil...

Just walked in the door from seeing it and it was AMAZING!!! I don't think I have anything to gripe about. Even Cap's uniform, which looked ridiculous in the photos that had been released, worked better than I thought it would. The two friends I saw it with are hardly comic book fans but they raved about it all the way home and we were all in agreement that the Hulk stole the movie. I loved seeing the baddie in the extra scene during the credits but think that seeing the beginnings of a Kree/Skrull dispute would have been cool. The next two films could then be based on the Kree/Skrull war. I held out secret hopes that a Hank Pym/Janet Van Dyne mention was somehow going to be somewhere but I'm ok with it not being there. Was truly shocked by "the event which wont be discussed", didnt think they would actually do that.
All in all, I loved it! I've been waiting for this movie since, as a kid, my friends and I would sit around and talk about how cool it would be if there was an Avengers movie. You pulled it off, Whedon! You not only pleased the ten year old me but you made the 47 year old me very very happy! Thank you.

... This was the best Hulk I've ever seen on film.

So good.
I agree 100%.   His scenes got the biggest laughs and reaction in my showing.
I may be wrong but it seems like they were setting up a Black Widow/Hawkeye movie.   Marvel really keeps upping the bar with every movie that they produce.

I'm gonna catch this tonight. I haven't seen Thor or Captain America yet, but my girlfriend was really excited to see "the new Ironman movie," so we're just gonna jump in.

My daughter and I loved it.  I do agree that it has some slow spots that we'll all fast-forward through once we buy it on iTunes or BluRay.

For me....the star was Hulk.

To be fair, that's pretty much the raison d'être for the Avengers comic book's existence too. It was born as an excuse to get a bunch of popular characters together.

I really enjoyed the The Avengers but I agree that there could have been a little more to the story and I think they could have trimmed 20 minutes out and made it a leaner, meaner, more effective movie. Nevertheless,  I feel it does the best job to date of translating superpowers from comic book pages to the big screen. The 12 year in me loved that!

Three thumbs up! I, the comic geek, loved it, my son (11 yrs) loved it, and my girlfriend (film school grad) loved it. Talk about being a crowd-pleaser.

I would have preferred it if they had cast Kurt Russell as the real Nick Fury, but that's a minor quibble and didn't lessen my enjoyment.
