Did you take the boy(s)?...if so, what did they think?

They loved it.  I think my almost 7-year old was a smidge bored at parts early going, but once that third act happened, all he can talk about is the action and it being the best movie ever. My oldest son -- who's getting into comics  Hearts -- was enamored from start to finish.

What did your kiddo think?

This was a fun matinee with the wife at The Cinerama! This was also a Whedon movie that Vince might enjoy; like Vince I haven't cared for Whedonesque dialogue in the past, in which every character sounds like the Voice of the Author (too glib/pithy to believe, etc). I went in with expectations along the lines of "no way this can be worse than the Green Lantern flick I caught in the same theater last summer or the awful Wolverine Origins flick a summer or two before"...I left feeling like I could remember the ghost of the little boy I was in '78 or '79 when I caught the Donner/Reeve Superman flick with Dad. Mark Ruffalo's Banner/Hulk was probably my favorite character...I really liked Cap in this and Hiddleston's Loki was menacing (I thought he was a bit whiny in the prior "Thor" flick).

The Avengers felt like "summer popcorn" that was worth my time. The chocolate-glazed popcorn at The Cinerama & having sweet wife along (and baby with aunt for sitting) sealed the deal. Good show Marvel Studios!
I hope they let Whedon direct/write the Thanos flick/sequel.
I haven't cared about or enjoyed these characters as much in years...it's nice to revisit them! It would be nice if DC could do something like this for the JLA...maybe they'll take a hint; even as a fan of the DC line I'm not holding my breath.

PS: It was nice to see the nod to shawarma...believe it or don't but you can get fine shawarma-on-pita in Seattle; my go-to place when I worked at Immunex in the early-'00s was the Pioneer Square location of Zaina: http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/1/3830/restaurant/Pioneer-Square/Zaina-Seattle

Both Millar and Starlin received credits in the movie....does that equal some form of compensation?  Starlin was always very careful and clever in his contract negotiations with Marvel (even majorly contributed to how contracts pay out royalties at Marvel, etc.).

Awesome! Thanks for the info. I'm glad to see them get credit.

At first I was a little baffled by the use of the Chitauri, but realistically this was as much an "Ultimates" homage as it was a 616 homage.  I certainly preferred the use of that alien race to the Skrulls or Kree (or even the Shi'ar) because they were effectively cannon fodder and those other races have so much history and nuance that I would've found it odd to have them simply serving as bullets in Loki's gun.

They didn't really even need to be anything other than just Loki's Army. I just got a kick out of the fact that they used something from the comics.

I'm gonna throw my hat into the Agent Coulsan talk...

Agent Coulsan was NEVER a real human but rather a LMD all along.  He will be "rebooted" into a new LMD known as the Vision.

Booya!

I just listened to the CGS episode regarding the Avengers ... Adam Murdo has the same Coulsan guess I do.  Hee Hee!

That's exactly what I thought, regarding the Skrulls and Kree.  But are the Chitauri simply bullets in Loki's gun or a part of someone else's bigger plan?  I know what you mean but the scene at the end makes me think that we'll be seeing them again soon.

....and, as for the EOC'ers, Chris tweeted that he loved it, too. Yes

Nice! So it's just DAP that needs to watch it Smiley

It is pretty long, you could almost break it into two parts. Maybe even do an intermission olden day style so people can have a bit of a stretch, take a piss, get some popcorn, etc.

I think this was Kevin Feige's reasoning. Plus...

There really wasn't room for the aliens to be shapeshifters.
I felt like it had an Annihilation Wave flavor too it. Even if it wasn't refered to as the negative zone or Annihilus' army, it still might as well have been. Clever way for marvel to effectively not use Fox Studios owned characters.
"The Other" could have just as easily been Annihilus and the Chithari his Annihilation Wave.

I'd die if they do a
Thanos Quest
prequel, whether a short movie or a series of after credits scenes or even a direct to DVD animated film.

Crazy that 'The Other' was Alexis Denisoff, who was Wesley on Buffy/Angel

Joss had some interesting comments regarding that end scene that made me want to give him a big bro-hug:

I saw his name on the credits but I didn't figure out who he was.

I love how he refers to it as the Cosmic Cube Smiley And I love how he's a big fan of that guy. ONE OF US! ONE OF US!

This bit was also interesting by the way:

Finally, for those who were unaware, the Pentagon actually does not appear in "The Avengers" for an actual reason: they refused to take part. According to Wired, the U.S. military's relationship with S.H.I.E.L.D. as portrayed in the film is what kept the Defense Department from participating in the blockbuster film.

"We couldn't reconcile the unreality of this international organization and our place in it,” Defense Department Hollywood liaison Phil Strub told Wired. "To whom did S.H.I.E.L.D. answer? Did we work for S.H.I.E.L.D.? We hit that roadblock and decided we couldn't do anything."

I loved it.  I expected to enjoy it, but I loved it so much it was over before it began.  I'm actually hoping to catch it again in 3d -- and I'm not a big fan of 3d, but you could see where the 3d would actually enhance this one.  And I almost never see a movie twice.  I'm so tired of the theater experience that I was going to wait for it on DVD but now I'm planning to see it again.

I was actually expecting to dislike the inclusion of Black Widow but I loved the way she 'interrogated' people.  That was a really cool touch.  Did anyone else think Agent Hill was way, way more attractive than Black Widow?

I'm hoping they turn the sequel into a lead-in to a line of Cosmic movies.

i saw this in RPX 3D, wish i had seen it in 2D...  there wasnt anything in the film that stood out as a great 3D experience.  If anything, the trailer for the new spiderman movie in 3D hurt my eyes.  The fast motion on the mostly still backdrops made the foreground hard to watch and ruined it for me.

I LOOOOOVED this movie. It is  now in that upper tier of comic films with Dark Knight, Hellboy, and X-Men
First Class.

Here is my issue: Can people stop posting on facebook, tumblr, twitter that we need another Hulk movie now.
Hulk can't carry his own movie. I think Hulk barely carries his own comic. Hulk is used best in this role. He is
the big enforcing avengers "weapon of mass destruction".

Have him show up in the other characters movies if you want, but please not another Hulk movie.
I could dig a live action Planet Hulk, but thats not gonna work within the universe as it is created.

I loved the Ed Norton hulk movie.
