I would not compare it with the transformers. The transformers (and especially the sequels) reminds me of many 80's movies in that it has this coked out tone deafness in it's pandering. It is like "Hey, you know what kids love? Racist caricatures! Snooooort!". That style of film making produces movies that are too sleazy for kids and too dumb for adults, maybe the opposite Pixar.
The Marvel movies are fairly well written in comparison.

Is it going to be a masterpiece? Almost definitely not. Is it going to be a hugely entertaining thrill ride? It looks more than ever yes.
Same things could be said for another very enjoyable Whedon movie, "Serenity". He made that movie look and feel like a great summer movie; if he can do more of the same with this movie, then I'm all in!

I only have three things I really hope about the movie....
1. I hope the team building scenes all happen in a montage in the span of about 5 minutes (that is when they are asking everybody to come join). 2. I hope there is a plausible reason why Tony, Thor, and Cap are fighting each other in a forest 3. I hope the inevitable usage of the "Avengers Assemble!" line isn't too predictable or too cheesy.

After watching the trailer I had two thoughts... 1) I really liked it 2) After watching the chaotic mid city ariel fight scene with Hawkeye, I HOPE at some point he yells, "NOT... LIKE... THIS!!!" the Tiki

Just checked out the trailer now...I'm looking forward to this and have no initial issues except that Captain America's Costume SUCKS!! I mean really? That is the best they could come up with? Really sad. At least the costume they used in the CA film had some grit to it. Will be taking my daughter opening weekend for it...

This is the best year of movies for me possibly ever.
Avengers - The team that got me into comics and it includes probably 3 of my top 5 comic book characters (Thor, Cap, Iron Man) Dark Knight Rises - It is Batman, with Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale, that should be enough. The Hobbit - Hobbit and LOTR were what got me into reading in Junior High, that turn of events (here comes the hyperbole) changed my life.

I'll have to see how it looks on the big screen without lots of cut scenes going on, but at first blush, it looks taylor-made for him to have a reason to take off the mask during the movie.

This movie feels like watered down Michael Bay. I enjoy certain Bay films but this just looks safe hollow and ultimately boring.

Brubaker summed it up best yesterday:
"is the Avengers the first comicbook movie done by a writer/director? And one who actually grew up reading the same comics I did? Yeah, high expectations."
Ditto. Marvel hiring Weadon to write AND direct was a ballsy move. And I think this will be in insane action spectacle that actually has some heart because of it. And it's seriously going to be a straight-up freakin Avengers movie! And an Avengers story like we havnt seen in the comics in years.

unfortunately ed is only partially right, as far as i know avengers is the only mainstream superhero movie to be solely written and directed by the same person, but Batman Begins, Dark Knight, Hellboy 1 & 2 and Scott Pilgrim vs. the world were all co-written by their respective directors.

Actually, looking back at what Brubaker said (from his twitter feed) he actually said "Marvel movie," not "comicbook movie" So he's on top of it, I'm just not!

well, actually, he's still not really correct. just a little digging on imdb found that blade trinity, the original ghost rider, and daredevil were all written and directed by one person. but we can just forget about those movies anyway, and i don't want to drag down the thread, cause avengers looks awesome, so yeah!

Looks like some fun...might even catch it in the theater. My for-certain theater viewings for 2012: -- The Dark Knight Rises-- The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey-- PrometheusI dig the Hulk-vs-aircraft stuff, as usual.

I'm just waitin' for Black Widow to bust out some crazy shit with that little gun and put everyone's wisecracks to rest. Actually, I'm just waiting for Cap and Tony to have some words. Got to be one of my favorite bromances in comics.
