Me too. There are a few titles like Chew, Sixth Gun, Atomic Robo that I just can't say enough good things about.

Believe it or not, haven't read any Chew past issue 1; but all the love you guys are showing it has me in the mood to pickup the first trade. I'll see where that takes me...

I read the L&R volume 4, too. Jaime's contribution was fantastic. If he ever wanted to end the journey of Perla/ Maggie on a high note, this story would be the perfect choice on which to do it. As a L&R fan from the beginning, parts of this tale had me all choked up. It's pretty strong stuff. Gilbert's story was...okay. I'm getting a bit tired of the fictional movie stories backed by the "real life" escapades of the actors. Fun the first couple of times, but this one was just a chore to read. Nicely illustrated, though.
NO SPOILERMan you ain't kidding about Jaime's contributions. Both "return to me" (letty) & the final chapter of "Love Bunglers" really broke my heart. TWICE in one volume! Powerful stuff. My 11ocoscars pick for writer of the year.Gilbert's contributions? Well it's par for the course for the New Stories stories. He's found his formula and doesn't stray. It would be fine if not for Jaime's propelling of the story and relationships. Jaime has evolved into such a brilliant writer. He was always good, he was always great, but these past two years...he has gone beyond expectations in every tale and structure of every New Stories release. Back to Gilbert. I loved his stuff, still do he just hasn't done anything new , or anything that feels new in such a long time. It bums me out, because he was always the one challenging narrative and bringing the surreal into comics. I want him to return to form.

I heard the talk on this week's show about Love and Rockets and figured I'd toss in my two cents. I completely agree that Jaime's stories in Vol. 4 -- especially the ending -- were some of the best comics he's ever done. Hell, they're among the best comics I've ever read. I didn't see that ending coming at all, and when it did, it hit like a thunderbolt -- but in a heartfelt, powerful way. It's so easy to write a "shocking" ending, but Jaime managed to tie things up in a way that was both completely natural and completely surprising. I've been reading L&R since I picked up the first trade collection way back in 1986, and the final scene with Maggie and Ray more than rewarded a quarter century of comic book reading.
Jaime is one of the all-time great cartoonists. Seriously. When you look at his art, his writing, his use of characters and the way he's a complete master of the comic book form, it's breathtaking. There's obviously no way to quantify this, and it's all a matter of opinion anyway, but I'm starting to think he's THE best cartoonist of all time.

I'm telling you, the last two years of stories have been beyond belief. I agree with you one hundred percent.

I'm glad that Chris mentioned that L&R New Stories Vol. 1 was a good place to start. I admit that I have had my hang ups concerning L&R in the past, mostly because I didn't know where to start, and after a while it started looking completely inaccessible. Other forum members have mentioned good jumping on points too, and these new volumes are really affordable, so I'm gonna dive in.

A word of warning: one of the most crucial elements in understanding the character of Maggie is conspicuously absent (for the most part) in the new stories: Hopey Glass. I don't care what anyone says, one can't know Maggie without experiencing her relationship with and experiences shared with Hopey. So, yes, the first issue of the New Stories is a nice place on which to start, but know that the Maggie in these stories is the product of a LOT of emotional high and low points, most of which are only hinted at in the four new volumes. I'm glad Chris didn't go into detail with The Love Bunglers, 'cause I'm gonna go crazy on it this week.

I'm sooooo going to bust his balls if he has the Con Crud this week. With the amount of preventative strategies he engaged in, the only possibility would be from the hotel lobby toilet seat (had to reply again...post #4000!)
