Competition is a fact of life, we need to get kids used to it, not protect them from it.

Amen.

I didn't learn anything until I failed. Then, humbled and embarrassed, I crushed, leaving bodies on lower rungs in my wake.

I miss the classroom.  Yes

I hear and see the same from students all the time. Over here, English is a required subject for all freshmen and sophomore students and some of them seriously fuck up in their first year. For most of these kids, the first year of college is their first taste of freedom. They spend their high school years studying roughly 18 hours a day for four years to take the high school graduation/Korean SAT test. Once that's done, if they haven't committed suicide they tend to go a bit wild for a couple of years.

Anyway, once they become juniors or seniors and they've had a few failures under their belts, they tend to work their asses off and really achieve.
