Okay, so I figured I was gushing too much about this book in the whatcha reading thread that I might as well start a new topic.
I was a big Valiant fan in the mid 90's. But I had to stop collecting when I went to college so I missed the transition to Acclaim and books like Q&W. Now I wish I could have read it at the time. There are some top notch creators on these Acclaim books: Priest, Nicieza, Delano, Ellis, Busiek, Avon Oeming, Maleev, and more.
But back to Q&W. I'm 8 issues in and I can't believe how good this book is. It's funny, it's thoughtful. I love it. As I mentioned in the other thread, I will probably bind this once I get two issues near the end.
Anyone else have any thoughts on Valiant/Acclaim?

I tried these comics off and on during the years they were published, but just never really got into any of them. To me, the best of the bunch was Shadowman (I think). There was a relaunch with with art by whatshisname from 30 Days of Night. I wanna say Ben Templesmith. Is that right? I enjoyed that book for a while. I tried Quantum and Woody but never got into it.

Ashley Wood did the art on issues #1-4 of vol.2 and then Charlie Adlard did the art on the next few after that before it started going to a different artist every issue. But the best character in Q&W is the Goat. Hands down.

I loved, loved, loved early Valiant. Heck, I even loved the latter day Valiant on some titles like Shadowman, Magnus Robot Fighter, Second Life of Doctor Mirage, even Rai and the Future Force. Good quality stuff across the board.
While some of the Acclaim reboots were interesting, overall it wasn't as exciting for me at the time. I think I enjoyed the take on Solar and Master Darque, but it was sooooo different from the previous incarnations that only the name remained the same.
But Q&W... that was an awesome series. Loved it. I can't wait to get to those in my database project.

From what I've seen so far, it looks like the corporate influence was way too strong. Acclaim didn't care about good stories, they wanted to promote thier video games. And so you get Ninjak being like Shazam meets Shinobi. I have all the issues but I've only read 2. It's Busiek, so it isn't bad. But it isn't that good either.

So I was looking ahead at future issues and they have an ad for volume 2 trade. Q&W are telling people to buy the trade. They have a comparison chart:
Funny Not Funny Giffen's JLA Morrison's JLA The Goat Lockjaw Q&W #4 Q&W #5 (okay, we admit it) Waid's Impulse 90 bucks for 12 new Kingdom Come pages Peyer's Magnus VH1 Magnus (the guy in the skirt) Powe Man/Iron Fist Heroes for Hire Troublemakers Speedball
I love the Marvel and DC ribbing. Also at the end it says "In stores April. Way under 90 bucks and not one painting of Alex Ross' dad".

Q&W is one of my favorite titles of all time. I miss it dearly, and my old issues are soon to be bound into one massive tomb.

Somebody should do Quantum and Woody podcast featuring a black guy and white guy called 'The World Worst Podcast' and put it on The Readerfeed. Somebody should, as soon as they find the time after starting a Milestone podcast. Yep, somebody should.

How about Michael Winslow instead? Love those funny sound effects.
