Marvel Noise Episode 163

I loved the new segment even though I wouldn't call myself a hardcore FF fan. I have loved the comic book in the past and think it is one of Marvel's best books out today, but I am hit and miss with the entire run. I have the old Stan Lee/Jack Kirby in hardcover but only read the first 20 issues. To me, the John Byrne run is classic FF and everything else is compared to his run on the book.

My first FF book was Fantastic Four #214, which was mentioned in the episode.

I enjoyed the hell out of the discussion.  Even though I was really only interested in hearing the Simonson stuff, you guys made the Hickman run sound so not unappealing.

Man, even though there's only an episode every two weeks, I'm always behind in my Marvel Noise listening.  Just finished listening to this episode and, as usual, I really enjoyed it.

Love when Steve teams up with other people to wax poetically on all things Marvel, and this new Fantastic Four segment is no exception (not sure if it's actually called "Fantastic Foursights", but King DAP christened it so, so we should all just  to his wisdom).

While the segment was informative as always, I just love hearing different people talk about books they love, since there's more than enough people crabbing about what they don't like.  Plus, it was cool hearing Chris Campbell, since I don't believe I've ever heard him before (If you've been on a previous ep. of Marvel Noise, I'm not aware of it). 

Like Alan, I actually liked Sue's short hairstyle in Simonson's FF run.  Sorry Steve, but I think Susan looks good with short hair.  What did you think of Byrne's depiction of Sue with short hair, because I loved that as well.


Now, onto our host.  Thanks for the quick, spoiler free recaps of Ghost Rider and the Magneto series, since I was going to pick both of them up in trades.  I just have one question for you though:  I may be mistaken, but I thought you were originally pretty high on the Ghost Rider series when it first debuted.  Did the writer not do enough to flesh out this new Rider to interest you, or was the variety of different artists that took you out of it?

As always, great episode guys!  I, and many others appreciate all the hard work that goes into recording and editing these episodes, so don't think your hard work is in vain.

Thanks Andrew.  I agree -- its much more enjoyable to talk with buddies when you're enjoying something.  It can be fun to pile on a title from time to time, but it pales in comparison to talking about something you are truly enjoying.  

And even if Alan isn't 100% into the Hickman run, his love for the characters clearly shines through.

I was.  I felt the first issue, while chest-deep in Fear Itself, did a decent job of hooking me.  Especially with Clark's art, but I figured I'd give Rob Williams some leeway even though Cla$$war wasn't as great as I expected it to be.  But then things became messy.  Not just with the artist changes in the first arc, but the story wasn't flowing right for me.  And I'm cool with her in Mexico in one issue and then the Louisiana bayou in the next.  But maybe her 'mission' isn't all that clear to me.  I have the last few issues on the stack so I'll read 'em in one fell swoop and see how that feels.

I don't know.  I don't feel like the book has gotten its footing yet.  Maybe we're treading water until the Venom event finishes.  We'll see.

I loved Byrne's long hair Sue with Sinnott inks before he came back to the book as writer/artist.  I HATED his first attempts at short haired Sue (Which he has said was simply a time-saver, that drawing her long hair was somehow more challenging....he kept Frankie Raye's hair long without trouble!).  When it got a little curlier with the little dangling curls by her temples around FF #250/Negative Zone time, she looked the best!

I'm extremely hyped for this mini "Venom" event since it seems somewhat inspired by the Simonson/Adams FF issues of FF where Spidey, Hulk, Wolvie, and Hulk teamed up.  Couple that with great writers and artists, and this has the potential to be a really strong crossover.

Yeah, mullets on women is not a good look at all.  Never understood that hair style.  That and the Jheri Curl.

I just stumbled across this episode. Loved the FF segment. Great stuff. I read some of the Simonson run when it first came out. Now I wanna find those issues and read em again.

Listening to Marvel Noise has made me ditch DC and become a total Marvel Zombie. That's not me bagging on DC or anything, but Marvel has always been more exciting to me. Damn you Steve and co for making me spend money. I'm gonna be bankrupt before you know it, but it's for Marvel Comics. So I don't mind.

I've always read some DC comics, it seems, but mostly when I was little in the 70s and all that silver age stuff was plenty appropriate.....in the 80s, I read Wolfman/Perez's New Teen Titans (having both been Marvelites, no wonder it was great  )....now, I just pick and choose when there's something interesting, but I'm not invested in any of their characters, and quite frankly enjoy them in cartoon form more these days!

That doesn't surprise me. I've got that feeling before and sometimes it seems like the people working on the cartoons know the characters better than ones working on the comics. They really get how to update and modernize a costume design for one.
