And that's cool.
But when it comes to artists I'd consider using to put their spin put on Watchmen characters, Steranko isn't on my list. I can understand that. Paul Pope and Jim Lee wouldn't be on mine. We all have different tastes.

According to iFanboy's "Pick of the Week" podcast, their new "Don't Miss" podcast will go up today, and features over an hour of talk between Ron and Darwyn Cooke about Before Watchmen.
Regardless of anyone's thoughts on he project, I think that it'll be a damn entertaining listen!

Episode is up now an can be heard directly here http://ifanboy.com/podcasts/audio/dontmiss/, or on the iTunes feed. Whilst it's not an hour, it is 35 mins of chat. I haven't had chance to listen yet, but am looking forward to hear Darwyn wax lyrical about the project.

I was a bit cynical with Cooke's involvement with this project since his superhero aesthetics lean to retro and nostalgia but these pages are beautiful and are a nice counterpart to Gibbons' storytelling. I'll need to listen to the Don't Miss.

Minutemen should be a good match for his aesthetic too, so I have a feeling this comic will be well worth the money. Of course, Im biased because I think Cooke is one of the finest comics creators working today. His involvement is the main reason I'm interested in Before Watchmen. I need to listen to that podcast too. By the way, thanks to Sam for telling us about it!

Wow, just looking at those pages... that's some pretty stuff that shows off some pretty cool graphic match cuts on the first two pages.
The don't miss was a bit flatter than I thought, but, as expected, Mr Cooke came across as very honest about the whole experience. Whilst I'm not going to deny that I was very cynical about the whole thing at the start I am curious to see the quality of the work that comes out; if it's good work, cool, if it's shit I'll just pretend it didn't get published :-)
Watchmen is a beautiful hermetically sealed whole, I don't think there's any way these ancillary series will sully it; as Darwyn says in the Don't Miss, they're coming out regardless of anyone's opinions, so let's assess the work and then work out if we have to throw stones.

I'll have to go back through the thread, but I don't remember anyone prejudging the work, just some folks being unhappy with the idea.

The top panel of page 3 is some pretty hilarious meta-unconscious-defensiveness

The top panel of page 3 is some pretty hilarious meta-unconscious-defensiveness I chuckled at that. I think he's smart to just address the issue that way at the beginning of the story and then move on. I like what Hollis says in the next panel too: "I guess we'll just have to stick with being ourselves". Cooke's sharp. I have no doubt that he can pull this off.

Sorry, wasn't very clear what I meant in my post; in the bit you quoted I was trying to paraphrase what Darwyn Cooke was saying on the Don't Miss. I was pretty impressed by the level headed way he laid thoughts like this out.

Just listened to Dave Gibbons interview on Word Balloon, he was being very careful about what he said about before watchman but says one day he will do a full interview about the whole project but now is not the time.
Thats an interview I would like to hear.
No a big fan of them going back and playing in the watchman world but i'm still intrigued and when the price drops digitally in a month i'll check out this first issue
