Thought this might be of interest to some people here.  It's an info-graphic breaking down a lot of the raw data regarding Kickstarter thus far.  The big takeaway was that over 40% of project actually don't meet there goal.

I actually think that is good news in a weird way. Let's say I want to do a video game about surgery and all my friends think it is the greatest thing ever... it would be a blessing to find out that way that there is no market (having lost nothing) rather than find out by staring at my product on sit eternally on shelves while the bank keeps calling for their loan back.

Funding + Market research in one.

yea i think its to be expected that at least that many go unfunded since there really is almost no filter to what they let thru. the slightly shady thing is that they actively hide unfunded projects from search engines using html tag mumbo jumbo. the links still work and are live but its not searchable.

more info on the tag thing

JasonF made a thread for this in Munden's Bar and I thought it was worth mentioning here for anyone interested.  Personally I think the goal seems a bit high, but hey, if this isn't the thread to bring it up in, where is.
So here's an interesting project that needs some help on Kickstarter:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/divalea/the-garlicks-pandora-orange-fail-vampire

It's an all-ages book about Pandora, a girl in a vampire family who wants to be a comic book artist, not a vampire.  It's by Lea Hernandez.

Here's a 6-page "pilot" that Lea did to show everyone what the book will be like, plot and tone-wise (see the Kickstarter page for the finished art on one of the pilot pages):

http://thegarlicks.net/2011/12/01/garlicks-and-toilet-water-1/

I'll be honest -- with 4 days left, this thing is only about 30% funded.  It's not going to come close to making it unless it catches on quickly.  So if this looks good to you, 1) pledge, and 2) do what you can to get the word out -- post to this thread, post on other forums, tell your facebook friends and twitter followers.

I think that's fantastic.  Just in my own personal experience, there is a TON of crappy looking pitches on there. If everything was getting funded, it would open the floodgates for people to list that really have no business listing. I really want the model to remain about stuff having to really be compelling to get successfully backed.

just funded my first Kickstarter project...

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/darkslinger/who-will-save-the-world-a-ww1-zombie-epic

I spent enough to get the hard copy, and I'm really looking forward to getting the comic.  It's in my wheel house of World War I and zombies.

I tweeted this over the weekend, but will say it here too...I believe the fully complete works are far more likely to have continued success on Kickstarter than incremental projects.  You want to create a 200 page OGN and have me back it? Done.  You want me to fund you to print one or two issues of a series that may span 5 or 6? Not going to happen.

I talked with one of my friends recently who's working on a really interesting piece of journalism on Kickstarter, its founders, and its future. I'll post it as soon as it gets published, but some of the things that Charles Adler had to say were a little surprising to me.

100 Souls

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1614371398/100-souls-project-an-art-book-from-steven-russell

28 days left to fund this one, I really like the art......

Quote
"Eyes are the window to the soul. This group of work is about presenting 100 of them. 100 drawings capturing the essence of 100 souls." - Steven Russell Black

Steven Russell Black, Hart Rieckhof and NSNart have collaborated to bring you the first volume of the BLACK MARKET series. 100 SOULS will be a 6" X 7" hard cover book collecting all 100 drawings of the SOULS. It will also include 9 ASCENDED SOUL paintings done just for this book. There will also be notes/comments about each SOUL from Steven.

We will print up enough books to cover all pledges and a small percentage over  to ensure everyone gets a nice book. This book will have ONE PRINTING. And the print run will be determined by you, the backers.

I really like these pencil-rendered drawings....very soulful.

There are a couple originals still available for sale, $22 each.   If you buy one you can get a notation in the book that it's "In the Collection of...." and your name:
http://www.nsnart.com/ArtistGalleryRoom.asp?ArtistId=1517

I'm supporting this at the $45 level & will get an original sketch in my HC.

Tome

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/44flood/tome-0

This one blew past it's funding goal on day 1.....it's now truly a "pre-order this spiffy art book" campaign.
Quote
TOME is an annual anthology in an oversized format showcasing world-class artists as they explore a single theme using the comic book, painting, and music mediums. And by oversized we're talking big, around 11x17" and 180 pages! That size will let you experience art and sequential storytelling in a way that would be almost impossible outside of standing in front of the original work itself.

[UPDATE 6/25 3:43pm] Because of your tremendous support today, TOME will now be upgraded to a massive 12x18"!!! Thank you!!!

This year's TOME will focus on the theme of VAMPIRISM. Modern popular culture has shown us all kinds of depictions of vampires, from the silly to the subdued. The artists in TOME will each take 3-5 pages to explore what we think is a unique and relevant take on vampirism as a whole, including the misuse of power and the objectification and exploitation of others. And at the conclusion of each artist's contribution, they'll have a one-page interview conducted by another artist to continue their artistic exploration.

The artists in TOME so far are:

Ashley Wood (artist, writer) - Lore, Hellspawn, 3A Toys
Ben Templesmith (artist, writer) - 30 Days of Night, Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse, Fell
Bill Sienkiewicz (artist, writer) - Elektra: Assassin, Stray Toasters
Chet Zar (fine artist, SFX artist) - Tool music videos, Hellboy I & II motion pictures
David Stoupakis (artist) - Korn album cover artist
    Edith Lebeau (artist)
George Pratt (artist, writer) - Enemy Ace: War Idyll, Sandman, Wolverine: Netsuke
    Guillermo Rigattieri (fine artist)
Kasra Ghanbari (writer, art agent) - MONOCYTE, Drawing the Line Again Anthology
    Matthew Bone (fine artist)
menton3 (artist, writer, musician) - ZvR, Silent Hill, MONOCYTE, Saltillo
    Richard Walters (singer, songwriter, musician)
Riley Rossmo (artist, writer) - Proof, Green Wake, Rebel Blood
Scott Radke (fine artist) - Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland
Steve Niles (writer) - 30 Days of Night, Criminal Macabre

Since nobody replied to the original post specifically about 100 souls (which I still think is a really cool project), I thought I'd turn this into a catch-all thread to talk about whatever the most current Kickstarter is that is catching anyone's eye.

Bob, Tiki started a thread on "Kickstarters Worth Kickstarting" some time ago...I've merged your thread with it.

I'm pretty sure you have, but if not, you should definitely check out Rebel Blood if that's a style you dig.

That's nice but $60 is a little steep for me for the book. $40 seems more doable...

I'm in the same boat. $60 is too high a price point for me on this one. Looks beautiful, but about $20-$30 more than I'm willing to back for the value.

I am not saying this in a judging way (let them charge what they can get), but if i want a BEAUTIFUL fantasy art book I would suggest buying any volume of SPECTRUM for about $20 or less.   Yes

Spectrum HC is $45, so that's $15 less than Tome.

The really cheap-o versions of Spectrum are softcover, so not directly comparable.
