For my promotion, I decided to think about splurging and was checking out the Romita Artist Edition. I was talked into it by everyone I knew saying it was a must buy. So I did.
It came in the mail today and I've been ogling it instead of my beloved Sabres hockey for the last two hours. The thing it just beautiful. The print quality is superb and the art is just remarkable to the point of words being unable to describe it. As Chris said, it won't fit on any shelf, and a shelf cannot do it justice. I feel a nice podium under glass is the only appropriate means of display.
I know everyone keeps saying how wonderful they are. And for all the skeptics, they truly are. If you don't own one of these, make sure to check one out if at all possible. But my recommendation is not to buy any one, get one you really want and would have a deep appreciation for. I got this one BOTH for Romita and Spider-man.

I'll be plunking down some dollars for Born Again. I was waiting for the perfect one for me to come out, and lo and behold, that's it.

as will i, i have the simonson one and it is AWESOME. kinda bummed i passed on the wally wood one, i recognize the man's talent and i'm sure that it is just unbelievably gorgeous, but since they are so expensive i've decided to really stick to creators and work that i already love.

I've ordered the Eisner one.
I asked around about the Wally Wood one and a few shops seem to think it's still orderable so I don't know if that means IDW might go back to print, but I'm not holding my breath

Same here. Absolutely love the Simonson Thor. One of my favorite creators doing my favorite Marvel character was a no-brainer. I have a feeling I'll regret passing on the Eisner and Wood editions in 10 years, but I just can't justify plunking down $100+ more than once.

I really need to hop on ordering the Eisner edition. I don't want to miss out. According to TFAW it's getting released in April. I too am bummed that I missed out on the Wally Wood one. I love his stuff in the EC Archives and would really like to get my hands on a copy. I guess I'll have to keep my eyes peeled if indeed it's still order-able.

I've been sitting these out and it's starting to bug me. Especially all the talk about how they'll never be reprinted and how much they're getting bid up on eBay. That kinda thing really triggers the "I WANT!" monster inside of me.
But, on the other side.....I know what happens to this kind of book in my house: I flip though it once and then it goes on the bookshelf, never to be reopened. I guess I could order them, read them once and then sell them on eBay?

It triggers the same thing in me. There's a Krazy Kat collection that sold out of Fantagraphics and it just about killed me. Between my brother and I we're jumping on about half of the IDW Artist's Edition. He got Dave Stevens. I've gotten Wally Wood. He's tried to get the Romita (but I think he missed it) and I'll be picking up the Mazzuchelli. They really choose people that are going to feel necessary to process junkies like myself.

I've actually been considering picking up the Wally Wood one on ebay if I find one for a relatively reasonable price

I missed out on Stevens, passed on Simonson cause I was getting the Thor Omnibus and couldn't justify back to back $100 books (though I collect original art so I'm all for this format). Decided to pass on the Romita for the same reason, though Im starting to kick myself for that one.
I did order the Wally Wood just cause his art, at full size, has to be amazing to drink in, so it seemed worth it... plus outside of some TPBs I dont have any of his work collected....
Was never a big Eisner guy, so I passed on that one... and the Mazz one is not in my wheelhouse so at this point I only feel like Im 1 for 2 (missing on the Romita) but once I have the Wood AE in hand (DCBS only got part of their order this past month, and Im still waiting for mine) I may be sad that I havent been on the bandwagon longer...

Congrats on the promotion Chris. I have gotten the Simonson, Romita and Wood artist's edition and it follows in line with my newer philosophy and buying habits of absorbing as much comics history as I can. I have really gotten into books like Dick Briefer's Frankenstein lately and I am trying to understand where comics came from and learn more about the luminaries of the industry that I just didn't pay attention to when I was a kid reading comics. It was so much more visceral then and now I am trying to step back and take a different appreciation for the books I am reading. The artist's editions really fit that concept for me. Seeing these works in their original form is really amazing and also spotlighting an artist I may have known but not really have lets me dig a little deeper and find out more about them and the works they created.

Wow. I've almost purchased the Sunday Press editions (and now looks like they're OOP?) a few times but couldn't quite pull the trigger. If this in the same price range as the other Artist Editions, I'm definitely in.

Personally for me I like the finished work that comes out and the price point is what keeps me away. I always weigh my options and I will take more great books than 1 big book 99% of the time.
I almost got the Wally Wood book but I put that money to winning #1-6 of the EPIC Marvel Moebius books on ebay instead.
