Also, did you Pennsylvania peoples pick up the Ed Piskor drawn Wood beers? (Note the millimeter-scale "22 panels" behind our man) http://www.wizzywigcomics.com/?p=488

I love that! It's almost as good as Wood inking Kirby on Sky Masters of the Space Force. Since Sky Masters was a newspaper strip, the dailies are gorgeous, lavish b/w pieces intended for b/w reproduction—incredible spotting of blacks and application of zips. The Challengers work, which left a lot of open space for color, is still really nice, though. I missed out on an original Sky Masters strip by Kirby and Wood by the tiniest of margins. Still pissed about that.

Thanks for posting pics guys. Please post more! I've never had one, either, which could be due to the fact that I DON'T OWN A COPY. I gotta wait until Sunday to see if I can get a copy. I wanna ask my wife to get it but she's tiny so she'll die if she has to carry it EDIT: Fuckity crap, wife called the place and it's all gone. They only had 5. Oh well... Ya snooze ya lose.

Been a casual fan of Wally Wood for years - ever since seeing his stuff reprinted in Mad when I was a kid. He did the Flash gordon parody, right? I picked up a number of THUNDER AGENT back issues as a teenager when they were more affordable and recently started picking up the hardcover reprint collection. They were being blown out by Diamond and my LCS gave me the heads up and ordered me some at way below cover. I remember reading MARS Patrol tpb and there was an interesting if somewhat depressing bio in the back of that book from someone who worked in the studios with him for awhile. I passed on the IDW artists edition for budget reasons but if I see it again I might weaken...

That beer label is cool! Thanks for posting it, John. I've posted this link before but just in case anybody missed it, here's a link to a blog that features "Sound Effects", a short tale Wood did for Mad back in the '50s. It was my intro to Wood's work (as a reprint in the'70s) and he's been one of my favorite artists ever since. I still consider it one of his finest efforts: http://grantbridgestreet.blogspot.com/2008/08/sound-effects-by-wally-wood.html?zx=aabcb0cee8de3eca

Thanks for the link, William! One of the many things that made Wood's work truly great was his ability to "sculpt" forms with black. He could do this in a cartoony style or achieve great realism. Even though he was usually working in black and white, like the work of a good painter, Wood's drawings were often shaped and defined by light. Here's an excellent example:

This thread is dropping down the page far too fast! Here's a beautiful cover that reflects another of Wood's great strengths as an artist and inker: his ability to suggest varying textures without overworking a picture. Look at the way he used line and shadow to suggest the different textures of tree, cloth, spacesuit, ground, etc. He manages to do all that while still "sculpting" the forms with black and utilizing atmospheric perspective to push the mountains and sky into the distance by inking them with a nice, light touch. It's masterful.

Just got my shipping notification from TFAW (I pre-ordered back in August): TFAW Shipment #1035885 1 Wally Wood EC Stories Artist Ed HC
Your package has been sent via USPS Economy at a cost of $3.99 for shipping and handling. It was $76 + tax + shipping, a great deal given the prices I've seen it going for.

I ADORE Wally Wood. He's one of my all time favorite artists and a hell of an inker too; if you have not read Cannon, you done goofed.
I ordered The Complete Cannon from Fantagraphics at their recent leap-day sale. Unfortunately, my order arrived today with a note saying that Cannon was sold out
