It's the same thing when someone reads Watchmen twenty years after it was first published and saying "what was the big deal?"

At the time, this was no joke.  And you're right.  Everyone's been trying to top what came before.

It's still a great story.  But probably loses something if you can't put yourself in the frame of mind we were in when it was coming out.

I read watchmen for the first time in late 90s or early 00s not sure which and was pretty damn impressed. When I went back to it and wasn't as blown away at all I think it was partly that I'd read it before but certainly my experience of other stories coloured the re-read as well.

When my Wife and I started dating she revealed that she has NEVER seen the Godfather... my mind was blown.  Huh?

I immediately set a date for us to pop some corn and rectify this unforgivable oversight.  About 45 minutes in she told me that she just wasn't feeling it.  I was baffled and I asked why?  The problem was, even though she had never seen the movie there were no dramatic reveals within the movie watching experience... she knew everything already.  The movie The Godfather had become the pop cultural phenomenon The Godfather and all the intricate relationships and story twists and turns loose their POW factor.

This same thing happens in comics all the time.  Thinking

I stayed away from this thread because I just wasn't feelin' issues 1-3 (227-229). I wasn't dying to read the next page or the next issue. I kept telling myself that I wish I read it as it was coming out, or at least before I've read so many clones of this story. But it wasn't so much the deconstructing thing, it was the inner monologues. Not that it was done bad, I just wasn't interested in what they had to say.

That said, issue 4 (230) was sweeeeeet! I love the quick perspective shifts. That was the first time in the series that I felt like turning the page to find out what was gonna happen next. I was so excited that I jumped into issue 5 (231) right away and forgot the whole read an issue a day thing. 5 was also good but I liked issue 4 a lot better. Fuck it, I'm gonna finish the whole thing now Smiley

I've read born again a handful of times and its a masterpiece

i just finished frank miller daredevil visionaries vol 1 and frank had legit chops as a marvel house artist. in vol 2 it starts with him taking over the writing as well. i don't think I've ever seen an artist change his style on a dime like miller did when he took over both duties. when he took over total control he hit another gear. I'm only on issue 18something and there is tension thats building to ultimately what becomes born again. theres a drum beat. I'm thinking of the foreshadowing with bullseye in the subway. great stuff.

I just finished it and I loved it. Knowing how things eventually play out will help me appreciate those first 3 issues more when I re-read the thing. Issue 230 was the standout issue for me although I loved it when things got kicked up a notch after this guy showed up:

That's interesting.  We got to the same destination (loving it), but we got there by completely different routes.  I LOVED the first three issues of the story (and the two issues that preceded it), but just liked the last few after Nuke, the imposter, etc. show up.

Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood/frame of mind/whatever when I read the initial 3 issues. Like I said previously, it wasn't bad or anything. And not even depressing like I initially feared it would be (I've read more depressing superhero deconstruction stories that this). I can appreciate what they were doing in those first 3 issues but I just didn't care for some of the internal monologues (wasn't digging the drug addict monologues).

Ben Urich kept telling me he's a reporter every issue. Yes, I get it.

It was the Jim Shooter era.

The scene with Ben, Glori, the big nurse chick, the cop, the other cop and the prison guard was some intense shit. Plus I also loved the black and white panel of Ben and Foggy at the park. Just a couple of things that my brain is remembering.
