I just learned about this conference that will be happening here in Chicago from May 18-20, 2012. It will take place at the University of Chicago at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts. Here's a link to what little info there is for the conference thus far (a website and registration info are forthcoming): http://graycenter.uchicago.edu/page/comics-philosophy-practice-conference-may-18-20-2012The conference is free and open to the public. According to the link above, participants include: Robert Crumb, Charles Burns, Dan Clowes, Gary Panter, Seth, Joe Sacco, Art Spiehelman, Ivan Brunetti, Chris Ware, Alison Bechdel and quite a few other indie/underground/alternative comics luminaries. I'm psyched about this!

For once I wish I lived in Chicago instead of New York LOL! My thought when I read about it was "For once, this sort of thing is in Chicago and not NY or LA". That conference looks awesome! It features a bunch of my favorite comics creators and I'm really eager to see them, hear what they have to say and soak up whatever knowledge they care to impart.

Holy...the heaviest of the heavy! I want to be the official conference sharpener of pencils (and drooler-upon artwork-er, but don't tell them that part...)!

The Chicago Public Library is VERY supportive of the medium. About 10 years ago I met Wil Eisner and Neil Gaiman at one of these. Talked to each for about 15 minutes one on one. One of my favorite geek moments in my life. The Tiki

I feel the same way. I don't think I can make summit City this year because it is too close to C2E2. I'm afraid to tell Zack.

Just heard on NPR on the way into work -- they are going to be streaming some of this. Looks like there's a webcast tonight, tomorrow, and Sunday. Here's the schedule: "Comics: Philosophy & Practice" brings together seventeen world-renowned cartoonists to discuss the past and future of graphic narrative. Artists participating in the three-day conference include Lynda Barry, Alison Bechdel, Daniel Clowes, Robert Crumb, Phoebe Gloeckner, Joe Sacco, Art Spiegelman, and Chris Ware. May. 18 Comics: Philosophy & Practice (Day 1) Today / May 18 6:00 PM CDT May. 19 Comics: Philosophy & Practice (Day 2) Tomorrow / May 19 9:00 AM CDT May. 20 Comics: Philosophy & Practice (Day 3) Sunday / May 20 10:30 AM CDT I don't know if they'll be available after the livecasts. There's a link on their site: http://graycentercomicscon.uchicago.edu/Or here's the direct one: http://www.facebook.com/uchicago?sk=app_191025314254993

The whole thing is sold out. I was very unhappy with how it all happened. After starting this thread, I visited the Gray Center link I posted above almost every day, waiting for them to post the registration and conference website info they had said would be announced on that page. Later, I found out the conference site had launched and registration had opened and closed without any further information at all being posted on the original Gray Center site. I was bummed and frustrated. I'm glad they will be webcasting the event. I had planned to go down there in what I figured would be a vain attempt to get a ticket but now I think I'll just follow the proceedings from home and get some work done while I listen. I think they severely underestimated the amount of interest this conference would generate!

Man, that Burns, Ware, Seth, Clowes panel was awesome. Had to miss the Mouly one. It was pretty interesting. It was all about New Yorker covers. They're doing a great job with the webcast production too. I agree. It's very well done (and I'm grateful for that!). Jim

There are plans to re-broadcast the sessions though no decision has been made on when that will happen. So for those who missed sessions, keep an eye on the gray center website.
