Damn, Ryan.

That looks like it was hidden in the paper and Tony was simply bringing it to the surface, the way a sculptor says he's removing marble so the art can be free.

You'd be right to be scared.

I went to his web site to see how much he charged for pages but he doesn't list a price. That usually scares me to ask.

has the same effect on me, I tend to assume that if i don't see a price for commission on there it's gonna be outta my league anyway

I got quite a few commissions done at c2e2 this year. All of the pieces that were $100 or under I paid for up front. Most were only $60. For me, not a huge risk. The two pieces that were over $100 did not ask for any $$ up front.  I would have happily given it to them had they asked.
In every instance, I was quite familiar with their style, and felt that the artists were "safe bets".
I was astounded each and every time just how much quality work that I got in return for my dollars. My expectations were exceeded all weekend.
I understand the argument that being able to see a page, then deciding if it's worth the cash, is a more logical approach. But, so far for me, it doesn't beat the thrill of seeing your idea brought to life by a favorite creator.

You had a fantastic haul!

If I was dealing with a bit of an unknown who didnt have a "set" style (a'la the original example) I'd first check the samples at the guys table to see what I was getting into, and then if I liked what I saw I'd reference it in my commission request...

" I loved that Batman you did for the charity auction, could you do a Juggernaut vs Collosus in that style?"

If the artist knows him limitations (like it was via a studio method like lightboxing or whatever) and knows he cant replicate it he should turn you down, or offer to do a "quick sketch" or something.... so your expectations are better set (and thus you are happier with the end result being closer to what you expected).

If he says sure, and then gives you something that looks totally different I think you are within your right to ask why it doesn't meet par with the requested style...

So much artist work ends up online now they surely realize it all acts as a calling card, and one bad piece can make possible customers shy away come con season...

Man, this thread really bummed me out last night.  Cry

I saw you guys posting your Dustin Weaver sketches and I went to my comic room to look for mine and realized a tragedy had occurred. I moved three weeks ago and I hadn't framed my Weaver sketch. It was sitting in my closet on the top shelf. I didn't take it with me when I left.  Cry Cry Cry

He did this for me back in 2010 when he stopped into our local LCS. He had just released Shield #1. He only charged me $30. That will never happen again. He is a super sweet guy and we ended up talking 90's X-men as it was our mutual entry point for comics and he killed this thing.

Unfortunately, I wont be getting it back.

I called the leasing office today and they said the apartment had been cleaned already. Which is what I assumed. I'm sure somebody saw it and said "Oh, what a neat little drawing." Then put it in the trash.  No

Yes Yes Yes Yes

After finally reading Fear Agent I'm enthralled with his art. I went to his web site to see how much he charged for pages but he doesn't list a price. That usually scares me to ask. That commission is amazing.

Travis

That web page has not been updated in a long time. At NYCC, The Fear Agent pages were a lot cheaper then the Venom pages he had. The Fear Agent page I got was $180 I believe. Most of the Venom stuff was $300+

Sucks, Lawrence.

Too bad River Rosales couldn't have done the Lassie treatment and warned about the missing picture hidden in the closet.   We know he can lock out residents.

Fear Agent is my fav book and I've wanted a page from Tony for years. Finally able to pull the trigger at ECCC this year. I was in communication with Kara via email and the page I was eyeing (page 2 issue 2) was $550. Ended up getting page 13 (or is it 3?) of issue 3 for $300, as they forgot to bring it. My wallet was happier, that's for sure.  Tongue

I can't say that I recall the exact prices I saw for the original pages at Tony Moore's table at ECCC, however I do recall that they seemed lower on average than I would have expected for someone of his caliber and stature as an artist - especially his Brit stuff.

I have really come to appreciate the waiting game: if you are lucky enough to attend the occasional 'big show' once or twice a year, you will most likely find a few affordable original art gems waiting to be picked up when you sort through a portfolio. At this past ECCC I remember hearing from a few people about the crazy deals they found on original pages at past shows (Doctor Teeth - didn't you tell me about a Leonard Kirk page you scored at the Calgary show?).
I don't know about Doctor Teeth but I picked up the following 'sketch' at Wizard World Toronto Comiccon from Leonard Kirk for $80.  One thing I'll say is that after reviewing about 300 original art pages from him I think his currrent colorist on X-Factor is doing him a disservice.  His pencils and inks are absolutely gorgeous:
I also got 3 pages from X-Factor 233 and 234 for a total of $120.  They seem more appropriate for the original art thread, so I'll post them there (I think this thread has been jacked enough).

To the OP: I was a little unhappy with a couple of pieces I picked up, but I figure since I didn't say anything at the time of delivery I'm SOL (and they were minor quibbles at best).  However, had any of my pieces cost $200 I would probably go back and speak to the artist.  Although to be fair he probably should have done that before posting them on the interwebs.

Boshuda I wasn't trying to start an uproad, just wanted everyone's opinion if the piece was really that bad, and if anyone had ever contacted an artist after the fact.

So to answer Wood's point a page ago and what Chris mentioned on the latest episode, he told Calero to just to a Colossus vs. Juggernaut fighting, nothing else.  Chris is right that I think that gives the artist more freedom to do whatever they want.

My 2 cents

No matter the quality of artist, 200 dollars should buy you atleast 3 or 4 hours of there time on a work. Thereof no way the guy who drew that batman, spent 3 or 4 hours on that X-Men sketch.
