Hello! I'm living in Portugal and have been asking around some universities in the USA about PhD programs in my field (environmental microbiology, algae, wastewater etc.) and the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, AR has a cool project that I might join in Spring 2013.

I'm an american citizen but the last time I went to the USA was in 1996. I have a valid passport, SS number and I'm enlisted in the military. Are there any more formalities I would have to look into?

And I just wanted to get some opinions about living in Fayetteville, NW Arkansas or that area in general.

Hope you guys can help me out!

Make sure you take advantage of the GI Bill.

There is student housing available but, from the information I've collected, that isn't included in the PhD scholarship.

Sorry, I didn't explain my situation correctly. I've never been in the military, I've only signed up for selective service!

And I just wanted to get some opinions about living in Fayetteville, NW Arkansas or that area in general.

I've been to the area a couple of times when I had some work to do with Wal-mart Corporate up in Bentonville.

I drove down to Fayetteville to check out their comic shop, & it's excellent.  That's all I've got, since I've never lived in the area.

That said, finding a great comics store in NW Arkansas is an achievement in my mind.

Arkansas?

Hmmmm, I got nothing.

Wal-Mart started there, and their quarterback Tyler Wilson is going to be a top 10 pick in the NFL draft next year.

Oh, and it's pretty close to hot joints like Cali and Vegas.

I live in Fayetteville, work in Bentonville for Walmart, and got my law degree from the UofA.  It's a great place to live and between the college and walmart it's an interesting mix of people.  Lived here for 10 years now and really enjoy it.  We have a very decent sized regional airport due to walmart, we are 3.5 hour drive from kansas city, 2 hours from tulsa, 3 from little rock,  5 hours from memphis, dallas and saint loius and 10 to chicago.

If you have specific questions about the area let me know.  And Bob is right, Rock Bottom comics is in walking distance from campus (just down the hill from it actually).  I use DCBS now, but used them for about 7 years.

If anyone knows where I can buy a print of my icon image, PM me.  I've wanted one for years!

Thank you everyone! From what I've seen and read on the internets the Ozarks are a great attraction and I like it's geographic positioning regarding the rest of the country.

Thank you Brian. I'll only know for sure later in the year but if I indeed end up in Fayetteville I'll have some questions for you.
