Did anyone else grab Popeye from IDW? Hands down the best comic I got from DCBS last week.  The cartooning is simple and funny.  The coloring is bright and retro.  Langridge's writing is laugh out loud funny as always.  Even the printing quality is a step above the rest.  The paper stock is thick and rougher than the other comics this week.

It's a really impressive book.  Makes me question why I've been reading so many super heroes.

This is the type of book that makes a very strong argument for the printed format.

I liked it so much that it convinced me to reserve some of the original Popeye out of the library.  I first came across it when they had that museum tour of great American cartoonists back a few years ago.  Segar was one of them.  Liking that IDW.   Thread Hijack Speaking of rebirths, anyone read the Airboy book as well?  It is like nostalgia week.

I haven't read it yet, so I'm not arguing, but How So?

P.S. I'll read anything written by Roger Langridge.

Yep, loved it!  I have been slowly working my way through the Fantagraphics collections.  Segar was amazing!  This comic is right in that spirit.  It follows from the the Thimble Theater vibe, with the whole cast of characters, even giving Popeye's first line "Did ya think I was a cowboy?" a fresh reboot.  I generally don't read single issues but this one might have me popping into the lcs every month.  One and done and great adventure story telling in the style of Segar and Carl Barks.  Langridge is the man!  Art is fantastic too!

I'm not a big original art guy but I would love to own a page from this.

I'll have to pick up the new book -- it sounds like everyone agrees it's great.

As for the Segar stuff, I'm thinking of starting a grass roots campaign to get Fantagraphics to reprint the pre-Popeye Thimble Theater.  Who's with me?

Out of the library, I am reading the Hyperion library collection from the 70's.  Nice collection with good history of the strip in the introduction.

Sure, no hostility sensed, amigo.

It's simple, really.  The paper stock.  I really loved the paper stock that Popeye was printed on.  It's a gem amongst comics, books in general, in my opinion.  I could almost smell the nostalgia from the pages.  But, clearly, that is a very subjective opinion.  This sort of tactile experience cannot be replicated for me in a digital format and, again, purely subjective, makes a huge difference in my reading experience.

Those are on streaming?  I checked a while back, they weren't there.  Have they recently been added?
