Shopping with DCBS does not preclude shopping at an LCS. I've been with DCBS for almost 7 years now, but I still drop in at my LCS almost every week. I pick up a couple of Indies off the rack, and I always get my Dynamite books (various Warlord of Mars series & Jennifer Blood) because I like to pick the cover I want, not the one randomly picked for me by DCBS. Personally, I get too many comics & related items to be able to give up the extra discount. I have saved literally $1000s over the years. Shopping purely on $, the breakeven for DCBS can be as few as 11 $2.99 books, if your local shop gives no discounts. John did an analysis of this a month or so back over on the CBP forum after I made some mention on our podcast that I'd switch to an LCS if I started spending <$100 per month & a listener took me to task on it because they get far less & still use DCBS. I don't shop purely on $, though. I can see the benefits that Christopher mentions from an LCS, but there is a $ amount to balance those benefits. For me, DCBS is a no-brainer, I love them, but I love my local shop also and generally spend $15-$20 there every week picking up "extras" that I didn't pre-order months in advance. Where DCBS really shines is for people that do not have easy access to a really good local shop. People who live in major metropolitan areas and have their pick of several shops or who are lucky enough to live near a really great shop have a decision to make, generally based on weighing money saved vs. various intangibles. For people that are 30+ miles from a shop or whose only option is a shop with a poor selection of the kinds of comics they want to buy are extremely lucky to have DCBS because for them it's a life-saver. I'm very happy that DCBS is around to service the needs of comics fans. My unshipped items: See, if I had a pull like that, I would be good switching. But I only get about $125 worth of books every month. And thats over-estimating. I rarely pick up extras unless I really catch something new. Also, the guys I'm with are awesome and take care of me. I've been shooing with Pat since 2000 and he is a hella nice guy. I ended up talking stupid legal work crap with him for an hour today. I could possibly have that on a drop in but it's all the other stuff they do that makes it better |

My first order arrived May 2nd. I don't know whether to thank the forum and podcast for turning me onto DCBS or curse them. I was only just getting back into comics and successfully limiting myself to the library and a few issues here and there. Then came DCBS and now each month my orders are growing.
I must say the staff has been great especially since I have emailed in multiple additions since my first few orders were without a copy of previews.

I left DCBS around the time of the New 52 coming out. I was going increasingly digital and I found that the weekly shipping was eating all of my savings (and I have to do weekly since I write weekly reviews).
But....now that my LCS is handling my pull list, I do miss DCBS. I think my LCS is pretty good, but they do screw things up on my pull list from time to time. Lots of things I said to drop get stuck in there, more rarely, something I wanted doesn't get added. It's nothing fatal, but it does make me appreciate the 100% accuracy that DCBS had.
On the other hand....both of these systems PALE compared to the simplicity of digital where you buy what you want after it comes out. None of this trying to decide months in advance crap.

I don't understand why this is an issue. I mean, I know mistakes happen, but how hard is it to put the right books in the right boxes? I had similar issues with my LCS back in the day. |

Been a year and half for me and the savings are incredible and the primary reason I stick with them. The flipside is of course that I'm ordering much more stuff than I would have gotten in the first place.
I agree with the people who say it's not an either/or proposition. I have a great local shop that's well run and well stocked, I frequent them as often as I can for things I forgot to pre-order, or back issues I decide to pick up. Overall though the discounts just make all the difference.

I've been using DCBS on and off for about 5 or 6 years now, since my old comic shop closed down.
Strangely, I just started going to a local comic shop again, but I still use DCBS for certain things. I buy stuff I want to read right when it comes out from my LCS, and buy mostly trades, and books I want to try out, but am not sure about from DCBS.

Wow, a little over 7 years for me. I switched to DCBS in Oct. 2005 when my old shop owner packed up & moved to Nashville.
I've since found a great LCS & I get ~20-25 there each week, but I can't justify not going to DCBS with the bulk of my order, it saves me >$200 each month.

It's two years for me as well (as of January, 2013). Discounts are the number one reason. Plus I just place my order once a month and forget about it until the comics arrive. Easy peasy. No need to keep updating a pull-list and hope my LCS doesn't miss anything on it. I can also order everything with bags and boards and then it's done for me. My List (not too bad, I've been trying to trim my list down to stuff I can actually read): 135 items / 3 |

Have you read #1 & 2 yet? What do you/don't you like about the series so far?
I have read Scam 1 & 2. It has nice pacing and a decent premise. Things are being revealed as they need to be. The art is decent but nothing to write home about. It's full-color on heavy paper with a decent page count for a fair price for an indy book. I like how the bad-ass in the story seems to keep changing and how I'm just not sure what the characters are capable of. There's really not much to dislike that I can remember, so the minuses can't be too horrible. Even Non-Human's and Fly's spelling and grammar mistakes stay with me, so I think this book is pretty solid. The premise is essentially what they've laid out so there's no apparent bait and switch. The parallels to Italian Job and Ocean's Eleven are pretty obvious so if re-imagining movies bothers you then I would recommend you skip it. They don't try to hide this influence so it doesn't bother me. It also encouraged me to pick up Red Ten (from the same publisher) in the sense that I was willing to take another chance on this publisher, if that tells you anything. A team of professionals, the promise of fabulous loot, the perfect job – what could go wrong? Well when one of them turns against the others, a lot of things. Join Tru, Doc, Michelle and the rest of the gang as they embark upon their mission of vengeance. Sure they got super powers so that means a lot of flying sparks, but they’re also the best grifters in the business… so that makes them even better.

Wow, I just looked at my DCBS account and noticed I've been with them off and on since 10/30/2004. I just passed the 8th year mark. That first order was for a few Invincible trades just to test the waters since that was my first using a mail order service for my comics.
That's longer than I've been at my job or with my Girlfriend.
Currently, most of my comic purchases are leaning more towards digital, but I still make a montly order with DCBS for hardcovers, t-shirts, and Marvel books that come with a digital code, since those are so much cheaper than buying the digital version from Comixology.
They've always provide great service, shipping, easy ordering. And of course the huge discount and flat rate shipping prices are un-beatable.

DCBS customer since April 2007. I've never been exclusive to DCBS, always bought a few floppies at the local LCS, mostly because there were either books a) I forgot to order b) didn't realize I wanted or c) couldn't wait for my monthly shipment so I didn't pre-order them. I've never had an LCS that offered a discount, so it always made sense to use DCBS. They have such great service (fixing orders, adding to them, fixing mis-shipments). My monthly pull list is just down to the Green Lantern family so my "to be shipped" list is short: I love those guys... (and girls) at DCBS. |

My god that's a lot of comics. I'm a fairly slow reader and can only do a book a night.. I'd never get through that. Saying that I managed to read almost every marvel now book over the last week so it might just be a lack of effort on my side. Good books in your list
You should see what Bob and John (from Comic Book Page) pull every month.  My number is down by about half or so from my highest point over the last two years and I still get too many books I'm planning on allowing titles ending naturally to further cull my list at this point. |
