It's a long drive for me but I will be there Friday, Saturday, and possibly Sunday. I went last year for the first time and had a ton of fun. I expect it will be busier this year what with it being the 30th anniversary and Stan Lee making an appearance.

Heroes Con was a blast as always! Unfortunately, I didn't get to see everyone I wanted to since I was only able to stay for half the day Saturday but I had a great time talking with...

Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue, Joe Eisma, Charles Paul Wilson, Brian Hurtt, Jim Rugg, Ramon Perez, Nick Pitarra, and our own Tom Scioli!

Everyone was extremely nice and happy to talk comics for a good while. I only bought a couple of things, but I made it count with Tom's awesome Jack Kirby war mini comic and a page from the crazy talented Ramon Perez...

I had a good time.  Wasn't there for very long due to a kid's soccer thing on Friday afternoon.  I hated ducking out when I did, but it was more than made up for to see how excited my kid was when I unexpectedly showed up at her soccer match.

Everyone I met was lovely and I didn't overspend on art this year.  Serious moratorium on frivolous art purchases until I display what I own already.  Smiley  There are a few people I'd like to buy from - of course - but no more run-of-the-mill, bought-it-because-it-was-sitting-there pages.

I got Jim Rugg to contribute to my Jam...

...and Walt Simonson to sign my custom-bound Thor edition.

Had a great time! Got to hang with Alan(New Mutant), Darrell Taylor, Chris Campbell and JK Woodward. Stopped by Dave Wachter's booth and chatted with him again and even got to sit in on a recording of the Dork Trek Podcast.

Went for the first time this year and damn was it worth the 514 mile drive!

So many guest.

So many great panels.

So many great dealers.

No video game or movie bullcrap.

I need more hours in the day to take in everything I wanted to, but I managed to meet most of the big names I've never met before in the three days.

The Autodesk booth was also awesome! Finally being able to lay hands on a Cintiq and Autodesk Sketchbook was a revelation.

I was bummed that I missed the SCAD Perspective Panel and Drink & Draw on Friday night. Should have checked the con booklet when I picked it up, but I was dragging ass since my buddy threw a monkey wrench in my plans to leave early the previous day.

Only things I would suggest:

- Con staff at the entrance / exit to the convention hall really need to herd con-goers and cosplayers IN and OUT. This is an entrance / exit. Not a blockade. If you need to take pictures step to the side, or into the convention hall and out of the way (not in aisles).

I realize costumes are cool and neat, and get distracted by ladies with big buckets in spandex too; but you need to be courteous to everybody else in attendance too and that means knowing when and where to stop for photos or a chat.

It has gotten to the point where I'll just be the jerk who walks through your photo if you are standing in a thoroughfare impeded the flow of traffic.

- Ban those stupid hand trucks with short boxes and rolling luggage on the show floor. I love Mike Zeck as much as the next guy, but I don't need two copies of every run he has done autographed. What's more problematic is these drag backs and hand trucks just get in the way of traffic.

And screw Radio Disney for blasting tween dreck in the entrance of the convention center while panels were going on. I was trying to enjoy the SCAD Storytelling Panel, but the techo OOMPA OOMPA OOMPA OOMPA droning of talentless autotuned hacks that appeal to musically challenged miscreants could not be silenced entirely.

I only got to attend saturday, but had an amazing time from the moment I stepped on the floor till the moment that I left the building.  I got to meet so many of the creators that I respect and love so much, and got to pick up some books that I've been wanting to check out.  My purchases :

* Gangsta Rap Posse 1 and 2
* Adventure Time 1-4
* Mind MGMT 1 (which Matt Kindt signed and sketched on)
* Forming
* Street Angel (which Jim Rugg signed and sketched in)
* Johnny Hiro
* Tom Scioli's mini comic about Jack Kirby in the war
* Underwater Welder (which Jeff Lemire signed and sketched in)
* Atomic Elbow 1 and 2 (super dope wrestling zine!)

and I got books I brought with me by Tom Scioli, Jeff Lemire, Scott Snyder and Matt Kindt signed as well.

As for my Disney Villain themed sketch book, I only got the chance to get four entires, but absolutely LOVE all four of them.  I had the Siamese Cats from Lady and the Tramp as done by Jeffrey Brown, Ursula by Doc Fantastic, Sark from Tron by Tom Scioli, and an amazing Zurg by Brent Schoonover.  I can't wait to get some more contributions at my next con, but feel this is a very solid start!

But man, my sons sketchbook was the winner of the day.  He got a TON of awesome sketches by pretty much anyone he walked by.  Highlights include a Milk and Cheese by Evan Dorkin, a Batman by Jeff Lemire, a Hulk by Matt Kindt, a Thor by JK Woodward, an original character from Dave Cooper, Two Tank Omen by Tom Scioli, Galactus by Jim Rugg...  and there's a TON more, than that...  I'm telling you, his sketchbook is borderline dangerous its so good.

What an amazing day for both him and me....  We're already planning on spending the whole weekend next year!

Well I go every year, so you're welcome to stop over at Casa de Campbell and road trip it down in the floating craps game on wheels known as my Expo.  Wink

And I point out one gray hair to Pitzer and he runs with it.  Cool

Congratulations on the win Chris.

I was hoping to get Sarah Richards Mystique, but it had gone over my price limit before the auctioneers could look to the left side of the room during bidding.

It was amazing watching the bidding for the Budd Root piece. I love me some Budd Root and She-Hulk. What a fantastic illustration!

Next year I'll try to budget for bidding on art and hopefully come home with something shiny.

Here are the sketches I managed to pick up and I'm so grateful for Evan Dorkin, Tony Harris, Dan Panosian, Dave Johnson, Mark Texeira, and Ivan Reis for just whipping out awesome free sketches!

Wow. Some great free sketches! I miss the days where quick freebies or cheaper sketches were more common. I got my Dan Duncan Shredder for $5.  Huh?

Holy smokes! That's an impressive $5 sketch.

The Eric Henson Dragon was $10, Bryan Mon Black Cat $20, and Ed McGuinness Dragon $10. I went light on sketches this con since a lot of artists can be a bit high for my blood.

Everything else was free! Rock Horns I lucked out hitting people at the right time.

I also forgot Geoff Darrow. He drew an octopus robot in my Art of the Matrix book.

I can't wait for next year.

Plus the vendors there weren't the usual I'm used to seeing at Mid Ohio and Pittsburgh. I managed to find a bunch of back issues I've been searching for. Score!
