YOU'VE NEVER BEEN MIND-CONTROLLED BY A GORILLA?

I just picked up some Heavy Metal issues from 1978 (...love me some 70's mags!) and Paul Gulacy's Sabre was introduced in the June issue. *brain opens up*         WHAM!
I remember why I loved Master of Kung Fu so much. I had it in my head that Gene Day drew those issues all those years ago and now the truth has been revealed. Gotta find me some MOKF!
Anybody have a story of forgotten favorites that have been re-discovered?

I won't say that I've forgotten him, but I've never appreciated Norm Breyfogle more than I do today.

I know that he isn't that old school, but he's just freshest in my mind today.

Tom Grummet. Just reread some old Robin issues he did for the 999 Challenge and was amazed at how good he is.

And I'll echo Slurmo on the Breyfogle love. He and Grummet defined the look of the Batman universe when I first got into comics.

I was always indifferent to Jim Mooney's work, but seeing his work in the Essential format has opened my eyes to what a terrific draftsman he was. I had a similar experience with Ross Andru a few years back, too.

Tom Grummett (w/ 2 t's at the end of the name).  A Superman fan knows his name from The Death of Superman.

Not really forgotten, but my tastes have changed over the years. I use to HATE Curt Swan's Superman, and now I can't get enough of it. Also, to some degree, Don Heck. Ah, to be young and clueless.  Bangs Head

I wouldn't say I forgot about them, but reading Shade the Changing Man recently has reminded me of how awesome Chris Bachalo (and Peter Milligan) used to be.

Paul Gulacy is one of my top artists... even though he gets very little love these days. His work in Batman and Marvel Comics Present made a huge impression on me growing up... he was realistic in a different way than most other artists. His stuff looked referenced from action shots, but also had a cartoony quality. I think he has dialed up the cartoony a little and that turns people off (they have no problem finding bad pannels) but I still really admire him. It is telling that Barry Windsor Smith, David Mack and of course Frazetta are some of my other alltime favorites.

Filth and fabulations

I've had a lot of these lately, with European comics creators that I read as a kid being translated into English thereby letting me "rediscover" them. Off the top of my head I can think of Hermann, François Schuiten, and Joost Swarte.

I'm still not a fan of Heck's superhero stuff but everything he did outside of costumes is so wonderful.

Jim Aparo. I wasn't crazy about his work in the late 80's/90's but man the stuff from the 60's and 70's? Solid gold.

Not to mention his gorgeous inks in the John Romita artist's edition...!
