Thought I'd post these. I work in advertising, and sometimes the stars align so I can work in things I love into the work I do. At the time I was working on retail & promotional advertising for the post office (USPS). I noticed that USPS was coming out with a stamp set for Marvel but they weren't doing anything to promote it. My art buyer & I decided to call Marvel & see if they'd want to do a project with us. Their response was something like…"The federal government wants to promote comic books? We're in, what do you want us to do!" In turn we sold the idea into USPS but they didn't have much money to do it so this was a program only seen in their small & rural offices.
I won't bore anyone with program specifics, but in creating this I got to work with Greg Land, Greg Leisten, Justin Ponser & Stan Lee! Dealing with Stan was the best part. We worked him into the design as the post man (Willie Lumpkin) but he has a different contract with Marvel so we had to go directly to him for permission, creative reviews and approvals of his likeness. I'd have to email Stan the pencils, inks, colors etc. I have several emails from him, he was always cool & joking that we made him too young looking. His comments would be to add more gray hair, more wrinkles. My favorite part is he sign's off all his emails with Excelsior!
Anyway, I did this project in 2006, was released in 2007. If you saw it all, congratulations. It's been collecting digital dust in my storage, thought I'd post it where someone might actually see & appreciate. Cheers!
