I was considering investing in at least the first couple of these hardcovers and was wondering what people thought of them. I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the writing and art (which looks pretty spectacular from what little I've seen) but also the quality of the books themselves, particularly the binding.
Thanks!

I'm not paper/binding expert, but the quality of the books seems quite nice. They LOOK awesome.
I have never read the source material, as it were, of the various cartoons and video games I watched and played as a kid and it kind of blew my mind in a lot of ways.
IT'S. SO. GOOD.
Good in a way I have a hard time articulating. The art starts out very good and only gets better (I have both available collections). There is a two page spread of Shredder, some Foot, and the Turtles in a pawn shop that I must have stared at for a good ten minutes. The mostly silent, Christmas issue where Leo has a running battle with the Foot while the rest of the crew is wondering where he is is probably my new favorite single issue I've ever read.
I'd always known that the original issues were quite good; They had to be really. But I was not prepared for just how much I loved reading them. Even the pages that are just the Laird and Eastman talking about how they came up with what and who did what great, and I usually have very little patience for stuff like that.
Side note: the new series is also really good so far (IDW??). The art is a little wonky at times but I'm getting used to it.

I have both and the third volume is on the way this week from Amazon. Well worth the $30/book (Amazon) IMO.

Okay now I'm really excited to get my hands on these! One more thing I'd like to know though; is the binding stitched or glued? Thanks for your replies guys

When the Turtles were at their peak commercially (1990), I grabbed the First Comics oversized, coloured TPBs of the original series - there are four of them, and they collect TMNT 1-11 (plus Leonardo #1).
I re-read them last year - still hold up. There's the ninja stuff, but (and it'll sound ridiculous) also space-faring adventure, a medieval fantasy style story featuring another B/W comics star of the 80s, and the only comic I've ever seen pull off a car-chase sequence.
Great, great comics.

I only have the first so far, but it's very nice.
The new IDW series is really good. The art is a little rough in places but Duncan is hitting a stride and it's looking quite nice.

that issue is the stuff of legend. The Leonardo solo issue leading into issue #10 is probably one of my favorite comics period.

blog / facebook / twitter / last.fmListen to the 'THE CHEMICAL BOX' podcastsComics were definitely happier, breezier and more confident in their own strengths before Hollywood and the Internet turned the business of writing superhero stories into the production of low budget storyboards or, worse, into conformist, fruitless attempts to impress or entertain a small group of people who appear to hate comics and their creators. - Grant Morrison

He's off? He did the latest issue. I know the new solicits have Kuhn for a two issue arc in a few months, so I thought he was just taking a break.

The new TMNT series is very underrated in my opinion. I seem to hear how it's just nostalgic for people to read and not how good and fun it is in its own right. It's one of the more fun books out there, and you can't go wrong reading it.
The Ultimate Collections are gorgeous. A must buy!

If Kuhn is on it guesting or for a longer run, I'm more than okay with that.
