So, I was on my way home this last weekend while my wife and kids were out of town visiting in laws, I happened to pass a garage sale two doors from my house.  I usually just drive by slow, and drive away when I see nothing of interest, but I happened to notice longboxes in this guys garage, so I stopped.  He had five boxes, and after finding a few things that strongly piqued my interest, I offered him $200 for all of them.  He jumped on it(which made me nervous), but I was pretty sure I was getting a good value.  I got the stuff home, and while I now own 4 boxes of 90's Marvel, DC, Valiant and Image that I probably don't care much for, I have a pretty solid box of older stuff.  After going through these boxes for the last few days, here's what I've pulled out that I think are good/valuabale:

Fantastic Four 46,47,70,76,138,141
Action Comics 440
Adventure Comics 436
The Atom #9
Sgt Fury and his Howling Comamandos #86
The Amazing Spider-Man #58,67,70,75,101,138,153,171
Tales to Astonish (Hulk & Sub-Mariner) #92,95
Tales of Suspense #61,77
Worlds Finest Comics #175
The Mighty Thor #135,174,222,244,
Green Lantern/Green Arrow #83
Sub Mariner (1968) #25, 61, 68
Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #136
Superman #262, 313
House of Mystery #179,223
Freedom Fighters #4
Ghost Rider #15
Godzilla King of Monsters #1
Howard the Duck #13 (first KISS comics appearance)
Blazing Battle Action w/Sgt Fury #140,141
Jungle Action Featuring the Black Panther #12
The Uncanny X-Men #129
Detective Comics #329

Now I'm not much for buying comics for their value, many(if not most) of these issues are in very good condition (VG, Fine, or Very Fine).  I would swear the issue of the Atom looks like it is fresh of the racks, with crispy white pages.  I had to really scan the thing before I was convinced it wasn't a reprint.  All of the FF's and ASM's are in great shape as well!  So what do you think, was it a good buy?

picked up the following out of the dollar bins today:
Empire #2 (don't know much about this but it was written by Mark Waid with art by Barry Kitson so I took a shot)

If I recall, this only ran about 6 issues with a double-sized 0 issue which reprinted the first real parts of the story (they'd been printed at another publisher)- it's well worth picking up the rest/ the trade if there is one- it's a nice take on the 'what if the villains won' concept. According to wikipaedia it was Eisner nominated as well.

I think so. There are some excellent comics on that list and if you don't want the 90s stuff, you could probably re-sell those 4 boxes to get back some of the $200 you initially paid.

YES! Even if you discount the 90s stuff you've got a bunch of nice silver and bronze stuff there at an average of less than $5 a comic. You could probably sell the Fan 4 and Spidey issues on ebay and make your money back and more (especially if those Fan 4 #46 + #47 are in decent condition) . A good purchase I reckon.

Picked up a ton of Helix material for 25p per issue. So, I got Vermillion 1-12, Brain Banx 1-5, Time Breakers 1-5, Gemeni Blood 1-9 and Mumbai Maguffin (a prestige format OGN from Virgin Comics for 50p) for £8.50- cheaper than the trades even if they're rubbish.  Wink

No rubbish there. All the Helix stuff is GOLD, especially Gemini Blood. It's FANTASTIC! Another one of those great series that expired way too quickly.

Currently working on amassing complete runs of Fables and Jack of Fables and made a little progress today:

Not a massive haul, but
Captain America #128, 164, 148
Hate #20
Amazing Heroes #174
Comics Interview #31
Heroes World Catalog #1
Hate Annual #3

Batman #672
Jack of Fables #4
Tom Strong #14
Fables #68, 69, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75
Atomic Robo fcbd 2008

for $4.75 from Half Price Books on Touhy in Niles (Skokie maybe?) IL.  Unfortunately for me, the books were all priced at $1.00 each, so I left a lot of stuff behind - quite a bit of Nightwing, Powers, Authority, 52, etc.
When I got to the register, I learned that all comics are now 25 cents.  I'll be back next week unless you all get there first.

Also unfortunate: the price tags are stuck right on most of the books themselves (but not on the oldies!).

I got another short box full of comics this weekend for $12.  I love LA's Frank & Son show!

Probably about 120 comics (I got to pick them out), all ones I had on my want list.

A bunch of issues of "The Losers" from Vertigo, Human Target, Dynamite's Battlestar Galactica stuff (which I passed on originally, but for 10 cents an issue, I figured "What the Heck")....lots more.....

I picked up the entire run of "War of the Worlds" from Amazing Adventures (except for 3 issues).  These are duplicates, but all were in better condition than the ones I bought off the rack in the '70s and read to death time & time again.    Oh, Killraven, I loved your amazing adventures.......

Didn't Transmetropolitan start out as a Helix book and then moved to Vertigo when the line was closed?
