Punisher: Franken-castle – I enjoy 50’s Atlas era monsters and Marvel’s supernatural monsters so this was cool. This kind of reminded me of Marvel’s Godzilla comic where some crazy baddies would come for Godzilla or he would find them after he was done fighting Shield. Then it’s interesting to see the titles transition to Franken-castle as the status quo as he’s like that in above ground in the regular world. Didn’t enjoy the Daken stuff as much, which was the weakest story in here. Daken annoyed more in here than another I read with him in it.

Birds of Prey: Blood and Curcuits, Dead of Winter, Club Kids, and Metropolis or Dust – Finished reading the remaining Birds of Prey trades I had on my shelves in quick succession. Great to see Simone finish her run on the title. Liked all new character that was added to the team but sad to see Black Canary go. Fitting to have the Secret Six in the title before they got their own book. It was little weird to see Simone go so soon after adding them to the team and then adding other elements to book right up until the end. The Bedard/Mckeever had it’s moments but more uneven and the transition a little awkward at times. Wasn’t a big fan of what happened to Metropolis or the why of one of the new members being there. There were more solo stories which was fine but it seemed like the time between members wasn’t divided as well. I guess DC wanted to keep all the stories of one writer together in their trades so that me flipping back and forth between a couple of their trades so I could read them as they were released and so events made more sense.

Last couple off of the stack I can remember:

I also read this collection of Remender goodness. I know it may be a bit of sacrilege, but I enjoyed Boschi's issues more than Tony Moore's (based on art). I liked the Tony Moore stuff, but I like how Boschi's scratchiness and jagged style, plus I think I enjoyed the color pallet a little more here too. I agree with the previous post that the Daken issues were the low point. I believe I heard in an interview with Remender that Marvel is in talks of doing a Remender Punisher Omnibus. I'm down for that! I want the War Journal Chaykin issues collected.

Read this last night in one sitting. It was a really fun and light read. I've never read a single Batman Beyond comic before this and I really did not watch too much of the show when it was on. From what little I remember of the show I feel like it captures the vibe pretty well. It felt like mid-90's Batman cartoons. I was a bit alarmed with the direction they went in with Dick Grayson for a minute, but it takes us to a pretty interesting conclusion. The art reminded me of Scott McDaniel for some reason; not his more recent stuff, it made me think of Nightwing and how much I loved that book when it launched in the 90's. Pretty decent read if you want something that isn't tied down by tons of continuity.

Noche Roja... This didn't do too much for me. I've kept up with all of the Vertigo Crime releases. There have been some that have fallen a little flat, but man this one is probably my least favorite. I broke it up into two sittings, which probably didn't help. It never really grabbed me. I may have to try it again, but it won't be for a while. For the record, I have been a pretty big fan of all of the Vertigo Crime books. Filthy Rich, Area 10, A Sickness in the Family, and Fogtown were all to my liking.

Not at all. Beechen did exactly what the people behind Batman Beyond tried to avoid.

My DCBS box came in today. I opened up The INVINCIBLE: ULTIMATE COLLECTION Vol. 6 ... and finished it in one sitting. I really think that's the best way to take in that title.

The pace of that series is almost maddening. It rarely pauses to take a breath, and continues to flesh out interesting characters (in between/and during the most brutal double splashpage fights I've ever seen).

Now the wait for volume 7... So in the meantime, I'll go back to working my way through Love and Rockets. If you've never read the Hernandez Brothers ... BELIEVE THE HYPE!

Read these again for the other thread.  They're both still great, and I'm not sure why Chris was getting so much shit for loving DKR.  It's still a great book, horse riding Batmen and all.

Just finished reading Fables Vol 4 (March of the Wooden Soldiers) and Vol 5 (The Mean Seasons), with the March of the Wooden Soilders I really started to get into this book. I think it hasn't helped that I know who the Adversary is but now i've really started to enjoy the book.

Finished Invincible Ultimate Collection Vol 6 last night. It is still the best superhero comic out there, easily.

Been sick the past week so I've been catching up on a lot of backed up reading.

Novel wise I'm slowly making my way through A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore.

Just got my DCBS shipment today so I've got The Boys # 53 and Sweet Tooth # 20.

Graphic novel wise I've read Johah Hex Vol. 1 and started digging into the first volume of Hellblazer.  After that I've got Peter David Visionaries The Incredible Hulk Vol. 1 - kind of excited about that because I've head so many great things!

I just read The Answer #1 and Jack Kraken #1 on the DoubleFeature app.  Both were fun super hero stories, no origins, just jumping straight into the thick of it.  Both stories were really fun and for 99 cent it's the best deal this side of free.  I wish all comics came with a full copy of the book in pencils and inks, and with creator commentary.  It's stupid awesome, anyone with an iPad should go get DoubleFeature immediately.

sleeper season 2

Yes

I've mostly been catching up on a bunch of single issues. And I've put in an order for The Finder: Library Edition by Carla Speed McNeil, which I can't wait to get my hands on, and Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu.

Can't wait!  Boogie

Just finished Daytripper. The art was beautiful, but I didn't connect with the story at all. I'm usually a sucker for this kind of stuff, but it fell flat for me.

Loving: Neonomicon #4. Great end to a great story. I'm so sad to see it finish, in a way... loved the writing, loved the art, the whole way through. Smart, crisp, and strange, and filled with a true sense of creepy dread. Sequel? Please?

Liking: Avengers #11. The whole issue is done in splash pages, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't... I like the experiment, but the story doesn't always allow Romita Jr. to really cut loose, resulting in some splash pages that don't really deserve the treatment because they're pretty average story beats. Plus, the ending was a real eye-roller... who didn't see that coming? Some pages really work, though they might've come off a little better with a creative panel border... the way it was laid out made it look like a double-page spread sometimes when it wasn't intended to be. It might also have been better as a single issue experiment instead of a jarring change in the flow of a larger story. So, I guess I have a lot of criticisms, but I did like it!

Leaving me cold: Joe the Barbarian. Kind of a surprise, since I totally dig on both Morrison and Murphy, but the total package is just dull as dishwater to me. I just, I dunno... don't care. Not enough mystery around the strangeness to keep me interested, I think. I took a break after the first several issues a few weeks ago and haven't felt the need to dive back in yet... might be a few more weeks before I get around to it. Maybe I'll get into it on the next go-round.
