Modern Masters: Vol. 19, Mike Ploog
What an awesome story.  I'm glad they didn't just go into his work for marvel and end the story there.  Will Eisner as a father figure, fisticuffs with Alex Toth, his love for Steve Gerber.  A great, great read.

I read BKV & Staples's Saga #1 & was in the "isolation chamber" from the hype & pressure to judge for myself of whether it deserves a yeah or nay.  It was very appealing in terms of the art & yes while some of the lettering is unconventional it does serve a meaningful purpose.  I will not rush to judgment on the story since it is only chapter one of a series but I am giving it the benefit of the doubt of BKV's track record.  The opening chapter was intriguing yet it opened my eyes to the new possibilities that await.  I give Saga #1 a 5 stars rating with the hope that more questions will be answered as the story unfolds while the artwork flourishes to its full bloom.  Read this book if you have not already.

As some who has read and re-read books like Please Kill Me, No Blacks No Dogs No Irish and Live from New York beaucoup times, I knew I'd be a sucker for this one.

I am pretty new to 20th Century Boys (bout halfway through book 3)…but what a great comic.  Engaging as all hell.  Pathos/ethos.  The art is incredible.  A definite cure-all.   Thumbs Up

Stuff I read today:

Secret #1
The Manhattan Projects #1
Saga #2
Adventure Time #3
Saucer Country #2
Fatale #4

Really enjoyed all of them except Saucer Country. I thought the first issue was good but not great and I liked issue 2 less. I'll give it a couple more issues.

I read Uncanny X-Man Masterworks vol. 4 HC was of the Chris Claremont/John Byrne era  w/ an annual included that provided the mystery of Mutant X & the first half of the Dark Phoenix Saga in the back half of the volume.   Introductions of new characters like Dazzler & Kitty Pryde that are welcome any true fan of the team.  The art is the key long lasting testament certain pages of Wolverine are just riveting for the eyes.  Yes Claremont & Bryne work as co-plotters & tell a captivating story but as some fans note it does repeat for new fans where the last issue left off with cetain panels  from but that is a product of a era that has since passed.  This is indeed of the highest points in X-Men history for a dang good reason. 4 stars out of 5 stars rating.

Mike Doughty's "The Book of Drugs". Man, I had no idea how fucked up the inner dynamics of Soul Coughing were. Saw them open up for Cop Shoot Cop back in the 90's. Great band.

I picked this up at C2E2 yesterday so this Cthulhu Mythos fan has finally read one of Alan Moore's takes on the Mythos. I didn't realize until I started reading that this comic is actually an adaptation of prose story by Moore. the script is by Antony Johnston with art by Jacen Burrows.

It's a good read, although I thought there were a few too many names culled from Lovecraft works and sprinkled throughout the narrative. That sort of thing can work in small doses but it can also become distracting. The art was nice. I appreciated Burrows work much more while reading the comic than I ever have at a glance. The story has some intriguing ideas in it and as Mythos fiction goes, I found it fairly original, if a tad pretentious. I may give Neonomicon a shot...

My recent Amazon purchases would make Vince proud. Thanks for talking them up big guy, because I likely would have never heard of them otherwise. Can't wait to crack them open!

The Monster of Frankenstein (Dick Briefer): I almost got the IDW hardcover, but this has the whole run of the "serious tone" version of the book. It's done in a black and white Essential style, which I actually don't mind at all.

The Sincerest Form of Parody: The Best 1950s MAD Inspired Satirical Comics: I don't think I have ever read Mad or any other parody magazine in my life, but I love the art and tone of these old stories. I think it's going to be a lot of fun.

Mad's Greatest Artist's Edition: Sergio Aragones.  I've been a long time Sergio fan, and this edition was an absolute treat.  It's a beautiful hardcover with some of his best work from Mad magazine.  It includes his regular features and marginals.  The man has been at it since the 60's and is an absolute genius.

I just started reading Marvel's Strange Tales HC vol1.  This is the collection of the first Strange Tales miniseries.  I've read the first four or five stories, and they are a lot of fun.

I just finished the first hardcover 100 Bullets.  I've been holding out on reading this series for a while, though I knew I'd love it.

Next in line is my hardcover of Joe Casey's "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes II".  I hope it's not necessary to read part one, as I don't have that book.

I read the 3 issue mini trade of Batman: The Many Deaths of the Batman.  It had Byrne writing & Jim Aparo on art.  The first issue is a silent issue so you have to use your own imagination & the art carry you through to the first third.  As for the writing of the remainder of the volume, I think Byrne delivered a rewarding tale that puts all of Batman's detective skills to use in solving the murder mystery of what happened to the fake Batmen.  Jim Aparo does a exemplary job of being of the best Batman artist that is in DC's roster drawing the Dark Knight.  If you want a story that is short & sweet and full of Batman goodness seek this out of print trade or get the issues at a local con, Batman 433-435.  I give this 4 stars out of 5 stars rating.
