Last night, I felt like trying something completely different and on a whim I purchased this:

THE HELM!!!

I'm only two issues in and I'm LOVING this. As a self-diagnosed comedy snob, I have a hard time laughing at comic books. I think that comedy is really really hard to sustain in comic books, but the Helm makes it seem easy. I was caught off guard by how frequently I chuckled over the span of two issues.

I nabbed this off of Comixology (It's one of Two series available from Dark Horse via Comixology...what's up with that?) and it was super cheap. In fact, if you want to sample the series you can download this first issue for FREE.

Also, Bart Sears is looking really good on the art chores. For realz.
Typically I really like Sears' art. I'm gonna have to check this out.

Too Cool to be Forgotten by Alex Robinson - I thought this book would just be a bit of a laugh (and it was) but the ending turned out more emotional than I expected. So having read and enjoyed that, I moved on to the tome...

Box Office Poison by Alex Robinson - This has been on my 'to read' list for a long time. Now I'm 172pages in and really enjoying it. I showed a page to my husband ("check this page out, isn't it funny?") and didn't get the book back from him for an hour or so as he started reading from the beginning.

Comic Book Comics by Fred Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey - So good! Picked these up cheap on Comixology a while back but just sat down to read through them. I'm up to issue 4 and loving it. If it's out in trade somewhere, I'll have to buy it.  Hearts

I finally finished George R.R. Martin's A Storm Of Swords, and goddamn that was a great book! (Valar morghulis)

Also read The Walking Dead: Rise Of The Governor for an upcoming Geeky Talky before the premier of the second season. It'll be an interesting discussion, because while I enjoyed it, it didn't scream "MUST READ" to me.

Now I'm conflicted on what to start reading next of the three anthologies in my to read pile; Hemingway, HG Wells, or Nabokov?

I read Atomic Robo vol1.  I thought the first bit was a little difficult getting into, but by the end I enjoyed the series.  Kinda reminds me of Hellboy, but with a more light hearted tone.  The structure of having a nearly invincible hero leading a team of human agents against weird enemies.

Next on my list is Morning Glories vol1

Just picked up American Vampire Trade1, looking forward to jumping in. There have been so many people praising this book, I figured I might as well check it out.

What a beautiful and emotionally charged little book.  If you are a softy when it comes to animals (as I am) watch out, cause this book will leave your sleeves wet.

Being a fan of all things Dog related, I'll try to hunt this down. Love that cover.

Yea…I didn't pick the best time to read this book, but I also can't suggest it enough, and even with that being said, be prepared, it's brutal.

Phase 7 #9 : The Conclusion to Basewood

Alec Longstreth's longest story finally wrapped after a dozen years of work.  The hatching is incredible.  The last chapter was the best written as well, touching if a bit predictable.  It's a great work, I'll be double dipping whenever he gets Basewood collected.

Asterios Polyp

This deserves a reread every half a year or so.  Perfect comics.  Honest. Pure.  I'm assuming everyone already owns this one.

Savage Dragon Archives 1

This book was great, I just wish I didn't get the phonebook volume.  I want to read more, but I've got to get this series in color.  I know that they're reworking some of the art to work in black and white, but it's still a bit of a mess.  Most pages are fine, but too often there are so many details that everything gets too busy and muddled.  Super fun though, and I'm sure it only gets better the longer you invest into the Dragon.

I need to revisit this. I read it, but I don't feel like I really digested it.

Dave, you must read as fast as Superman. I don't know how you fit it all in.
