Last night, I was tuned into the birth of my newest granddaughter, Emily Nicole Danielle Sanders.  6lbs, 8 oz. and 18 inches long --- great size for being 5 weeks early.   I'm counting on reading the Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers or one of the Franklin Richards trades as bedtime stories to her and her big sister.  Thumbs Up

Watched Push tonight.

Just finished it myself. I thought it was pretty good. Surprisingly, Dakota Fanning was great in the film.

Just finished I Love You, Man.

Funny flick. Could have used a little more Andy Samberg and Thomas Lennon though.

About to check out The Burrowers. Hope it's entertaining. The trailer looked good.

EDIT: A fun little weird-horror movie that's worth checking out. Think Bram Stoker's The SearchersThumbs Up

Just got done watching [Rec], which is what Quarantine was based on.  I haven't seen Quarantine, but got a kick out of this one!  Very Blair Witch Projecty, but good.

Just watched Akira.

For the first time? If it was the first time, how did you like the art style? The animation? Did you like the story? Favorite character? Did you read the manga? Did you watch it in a group? How was the group experience if you watched in a group? Did you like the ending?

Zombie Girl.
It's a doc on Hulu about a 12-year-old girl making a feature-length zombie movie called Pathogen. Kinda cute, not required viewing, though.

Yeah it was my first time watching it, I'll admit I'm not the biggest anime/manga fan but it was amazing. The art style and animation where one of the most appealing aspects of the film, the story was great but I'll admit I didn't like the ending and probably my favourite character was Tetsuo Shima, he did some horrible things but I sympathized with him. After watching it I think I'll read the manga, and if anyone who reads this who's not a big anime fan WATCH IT it's worth the experience.

As for me, I just cracked open my Kids in The Hall Season 3 boxed set.  I love the Kids in The Hall.  It reminds me of Junior High...

oh hell yeah, akira is awesome. funny thing is, animation and design wise, its still BETTER than a lot of tv and feature film animation today. its what, 10 years old? more? it holds up just as well as it did when it first came out.

my one gripe was how the story gets muddled at the end. i really didn't get the whole who/where/what is akira. but the action is great! love the ending. my favorite character is kaneda, the han solo kind of guy. a bastard in the begining but a hero by the end. tetsuo IMO is a punk ass. sympathetic, but still a punk ass. Wink *(sorry baffels!)

Trivia! Did you know that Akira is a scottish female name, and that it means anchor?

Most of Otomo's work in animation in that era still holds up. If you ever come across the movie Roujin Z, which was written by him, then get it! It has a completely different story than Akira, but they make use of Otomo's unique style.
Otherwise, yeah, Akira is really a cornerstone of modern anime and I'm glad that you enjoyed. Just don't be afraid to pick up some new anime movies up.

Akira, visually and tonally, is an amazing flick, but I can't say I loved the overall story. Muddled is definitely the right word to describe it for me.

The Akira manga, on the other hand, is a piece of brilliance and one of my favorite comics of all time. Highly recommended, especially if you had problems with the story of the anime.

Also, if you dig Katsuhiro Otomo's anime work, you should DEFINITELY check out his most recent one, a movie called Steamboy. It's got the feel of a classic Disney film (think Lady & the Tramp meets Steampunk), the sensibility of a rolicking adventure (think the Rocketeer) , and the pathos and meditations on morality and science that make it distinctly Otomo. Though it's not groundbreaking the way Akira was (because Akira already broke that ground), I personally enjoy it much much more. AND it has a fantastic soundtrack by Steve Jablonsky.

Slingblade on Netflix. Haven't seen it since it first came out. Ritter and Yoakam really carried this movie.
